Can Samsung only copy stuff?

I do think Samsung started out badly (after the iPhone introduction) by blatantly copying everything that Apple did. There's a photo somewhere of their first iPhone copy, the charger, packaging, and even the stores with the marketing showing a bunch of apps, it was a direct copy. Right down to the last detail their products and accessories were exactly the same, and no one else had the same as that time so it was obvious. Sort of in the same vein as Apple's stunt a few years ago asking Redmond to start their photocopiers at the beginning of a conference, Samsung actually did it.

However, their new phones (S3) and tablets are gradually looking nothing like what Apple is doing, and that's great, they're innovating and I'll admit they've got some great products that are heaps better than Apple's currently. And I'd expect if HTC blatantly copied their design, right down to the charger and *cough* stores *cough*, that Samsung would take them to court.

Look at what they're doing with TV's, that's all their work, and it's fabulous. It works, it's innovative.

However, they started off (I realise they were around before the iPhone, and that goes to show what changed too) by just ripping off another company's IP. That's not on, and they're paying the price now. Anyone that can't see the similarities immediately following the iPhone introduction is too much of a fanboy, and yes, I do have a lot of Apple products, but I don't just buy them, and haven't for a while, as they've not released or updated what I want. The only reason I don't switch is I'm too locked in and comfortable now. That could change a few years down the track, but no promises there.

I watched the interview in Samsung's new flagship store in Sydney, looked at how they dressed their employees, how they laid out the store... There are many different ways to bring something to market, at the very least they were inspired by Apple, but that's not what their man (Samsung Australia VP Telecommunications) said. Apparently it was all their own idea. Makes it very hard to take them seriously if they say stuff like that, ya know. There's nothing wrong with copying a store design, just say so and put it to bed.

How are they innovating? I see very little innovation in any Samsung handset these days. Apart from a very pretty screen, there's not much difference thanks to Android.

If anything, it's Android vs iOS, not Samsung vs Apple.

Innovation in how they’re approaching design is what I meant, nothing ground breaking, yet… perhaps they could claim that face tracking-screen dimming feature, but I doubt I’d ever use that. They have moved on from their iPhone lookalikes to something that looks a lot better though.

And Apple is an inventor? If only that were true.

Every big company has screwed someone along their path to the top....

Anyone downloaded the latest Samsung update?

Don't know if it's just me, S3s or otherwise, but the keyboard has changed a bit. Instead of straight-cornered rectangles as the "keys", the keyboard "keys" have changed shape to rectangles with rounded corners.

The shapes look suggestive of Apple's keyboards on their devices. Will this be a point on the next law suit:?::?::?:

Don't patents have a finite life - say 10 years or something?

In other news tomorrow is iPhone 5 day!

I'm looking forward to it, but considering all the leaks not sure resell be anything revolutionary. At least I'll probably be able to download iOS 6 at last though

Looking forward to iOS6 - I am hoping to break my vodafone contract and switch to iPhone5 (which I still maintain should be called iPhone6 but I know I have lost that argument) - ordinarily I wouldnt switch but the Vodafone coverage is just too poor for words.

Samsung are winning the war anyway, I saw on one of the morning shows in the phone market Samsung has gone up to 33% and Apple down to 17%.
