The 747-200's were (unreliably) operating SYD-PER in 2001/2, and had economy in the upper deck.

Yes, quite true, the mid 80s retirement was for EBA, the aircraft in question, Qantas placed another order in 1978 .

Wouldnt do 14hr with a full pax load - it must have gone over empty.

In this case it was a ferry flight, but there is very little difference in range between the variants at MTOW, in fact the 200B had a better range than the 300 and is only 700km less than the 744! From memory 14 hour flights would have been possible with pax etc however a lack of suitable alternate aerodromes was the issue in many cases such as LAX-MEL. coughet Air operated their 742 LGW-BKK non stop.

If you look at the photos of EBA on that site, the layout features for the first 5 years of its life, as Ozbeachbabe points out she went home to get a reconfig to 10 abreast after her first 5 years. Certainly had some interesting highlights in her life, she was the 9th 200 series to be delivered:

Returned to Boeing (Everett) for 10 abreast seating modifications - February 16, 1976
(BTW that was a 14 hour flight)!

Chartered by Gina Hayward for a two day odyssey around Australia - June 10 - 11, 1979
This was to mark Lang Hancock's (her father) 70th birthday with 300 invited guests

Operated final revenue service Sydney-Nadi-Sydney as QF93/94 (Capt A. Bones) - April 30, 1984

There are a few key differences between this undated "promo" photo and the cabin photos dated 1971.
  • [•]Overhead lockers are continuous and are above the window seats as well as the center seats.
[•]seat fabric is patterned in some seats
[•]crew uniforms are different for the ladies - patterned dress no hat.
    [•]seat shape is different

Also if you read the history a bit further the aircraft came back to qantas in the late 1980s.

She certainly did, QF sure got value out of her, and she is still going. As for the photo, the staircase photo dated 71 shows the same config with same seats. Being the first Jumbo for QF, I suspect she had a few reconfigs as they settled her in, just like the A380s now.

Can't see that myself; of the 2 1971 photos with stairs one shows overhead lockers above the side seats and different seats. The other doesn't show the overheads at all and also has different seats.

The possibilities are endless when you're ferrying a flight & have bugger all pax & cargo. The delivery flight of the first B744 IIRC was non-stop LHR/SYD.

These two photos (labelled economy 1971) also suggest a 2x4x2 configuration

I was looking at that photo & thinking it may have been First Class not Economy as the sprial staircase is visible so obviously very forward in the cabin.

I'm also thinking that the photo referred to in the OP was standard Boeing factory seating which would be in place for the delivery flight then changed by the airline to suit their requirements once they have taken delivery of the aircraft which may explain why it's not the bright floral pattern as seen in other photos.

I didn't even notice that. Just on the second photo from the seats; I feel that should be business due to the bubbly on the drinks trolley. Also I think it's a bit strange to have the stairs to the captain cook (J) lounge in the Y cabin.

In one of the 1977 photos the stairs are in the first cabin. But then in the photo next to it the first drinks service is to a guy sitting in a set of 3 seats.

Flew on a -200 CNS-DRW on the old QF61 route around the turn of the century.

I picked my Daughter and S-I-L up from their honeymoon on the last commercial flight of a -200 PER-MEL late November around the same time.

Could not help myself after having a close look at that photo!
