My Easter plans have fallen through, so I am thinking of taking a city break to Brisbane - a place I have not been to for over 20 years!

Can anyone recommend a hotel for 3-4 nights. Ideally, I would like something central with a pool. Budget is around $250-$300 per night. I am not loyal to any hotel chains but would prefer a larger hotel.

If you know of any hotel deals, let me know. Always happy to save a few dollars.

Thanks, pollywaffle.

Depending on the rate of the day.

Try Hilton which is in the mall.

Pullman not bad and it is a very short walk to the Mall and just across from King George Sq.

Also if you want to stay near South Bank Rydges is not bad.

I stay at the Hilton more than the other 2.

I would have looked up rates but not sure how many people will be staying in your room.

Hilton is central to the CBD. the treasury hotel is also close and very good if you like spacious rooms.

Treasury has poor noise insulation though and I don't recall a pool.

Novotel is prob my favorite, but not so great a location. Mercure is a bit tired but still good. Ibis is really not good. Haven't been in traders since it was the holiday inn. Avoid m on Mary, casino towers, festival towers, Charlotte towers unless you want an apartment room. Istay is pretty bad too. All of the apartment hotels are getting tired.

Park Regis north quay is also to be avoided.

Rydges is OK but a star above what they actually are. There are other hotels in south bank probably nicer (not the riverside hotel though).

Hilton would be my pick probably if you can get a good rate. Sofitel I dont really like but some do. Down on the river the rooms in the Stamford are pretty nice.

I'd try the Stamford. Best location, nice rooms. And they should have some special Easter rates.

A friend got a good rate through wotif the Christmas before last. So yes there are good rates. (Not that I recommend wotif. Ripoff merchants).

Also the Marriott is one hotel on the river that people love. Not sold on the location (its the wrong end of the city but only 10mins walk back to the mall and I haven't stayed there or visited any rooms.

Quay West would be my choice but its not cheap, Sofitel second choice with some good deals including a club room for $250, it's pool is great. Hilton can be a consideration if swimming is in the afternoon, it's pool is small. Not sure if you have a car but that may affect choices re parking rates. There are quite a lot of chain apartment options as well which in fact may represent better value such as Mantra, Oaks etc.

None of the Oaks apartments in Brisbane are good.

Interesting sweeping generalisation given the variety in terms of location, facilities and prices, more details please, I was very impressed by Aurora.

Oaks has many apartment blocks in Brisbane that they manage, indeed. However, all are getting old and tatty. As for Aurora, TripAdvisor really has poor reviews:

Can't say I've stayed there - but I've only heard negative views about the place overall, whether they come from tenants or visitors (apart from the view of course!)

Fair enough, although old and tatty I find hard to believe given they were built in 2006 and 2007 for the most part, of the 9 on offer Aurora, Charolette and 212 Margaret I have frequented in the past year and certainly were not tatty or old for the rooms I had, what ones did you stay in that were that way?

Seeing you ask:
- iStay on Albert (An Oaks property, but cheaper brand. They don't even provide Shampoo)
- Charlotte Towers.
- Festival Towers.
I've also stayed in another Oaks property, but can't recall which at the moment.

All were showing their age and lack of maintenance overall. The constant movement of people in and out, plus the party animals every Friday and Saturday night take their toll on those places. And do you really think that 212 Margaret St is worthy of 4 1/2 stars? (as one example).

Like others here, I would plump for the Hilton. Central CBD, newly renovated lobby level restaurant, reviews are good.

Pollywaffle, if Hilton is your choice and I have a spare Member for a Stay card, happy to send to you. 20% off rates would certainly sweeten the deal. I'll check when I get home (out walking the dogs at the moment).

I was always a fanatic Oaks properties fan, but I agree that the standards have slipped over the past one or two visits to Aurora and Felix. Which is sad because they used to be well priced and great quality, compared to the boxy small expensive hotel rooms in the city.

We are heading up this weekend and will be giving the Mantra at Southbank a go (will be a nice change of scene). Will report back next week.

I've stayed at Oaks on Charlotte St and had no issues with the maintenance. The apartment I had was in very good order and clean. However there was an extremely strong smell of disinfectant or detergent which was a little unpleasant.

My parents enjoyed the Treasury hotel - one to consider if you like the old world 'charm' (not me).

Some of my fave hotels in the Brisbane area but note none are right in the middle of the CBD which might or might not work for you:
* Emporium (Fortitude Valley)
* Limes (Fortitude Valley)
* Spicers Balfour (New Farm) - Veuve Sunday brunch is amazeballs.

All very well located near great bars, restaurants and cafes. Spicers Balfour is very near Anise on Brunswick St which is one of the best degustation restaurants I've ever dined at in Brisbane (not that difficult) though I think Anise is undergoing a refurb for the next month or so.

* Limes (Fortitude Valley)

I LOVED Limes - the rooms were a bit narrow but in an acceptable modern-chic sort of way. The club upstairs was fantastic, and the hotel is in a great spot if you want to go clubbing or go to a concert/festival up the road. The area can be a bit dodgy tho.
