Can you skip first flight of 2 flights ?

Wow what sector did you skip on and did AA realise what you'd done? If so they mustn't have cared and just re-issued a new eticket. I'd say the original CX flight coupons on US Air 037 or AA 001 ticket stock were probably suspended after you noshowed and CX probably could not unsuspend them without calling the issuing carrier but were within their rights to tell you to purchase a new ticket as per the fare rules.

Glad in worked out okay for you though.

we were originally booked from HCMC Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City) to Hong Kong to take a connecting flight,
but we were staying in Hoi An and wanted to miss the extra flight from Danang to HCMC - thereby flying directly from Danang to Hong Kong so, I was just as happy to lose the business flight from DAD to HCMC and buy a one way flight from DAD to Hong Kong instead.

How did they know? I have no idea- I felt most likely it showed up on the computer screen. It was pretty worrying. I'm not sure that American were worried, as I said, in a very short time, the Advantage customer service re-routed the ticket and we were on our way.

Saw some Air Canada flights earlier in the year which were SYD-YVR-LAX for $801 return. But SYD-YVR return was $1801 on the same metal! How tempting would that be to jump off in YVR? I know it would all go horribly wrong though.

If the LAX airfare permits a stopover in YVR, you could book your ticket as SYD/YVR have a stopover then fly YVR/LAX being your destination or turnaround point after your stay in YVR. Then just fly LAX/xYVR/SYD at the end of the trip. If you can two stopovers in YVR then you could have a second stay in YVR which would essentially allow you to stay in YVR and have a side trip to LAX which could even just be for a weekend.

Always take all the flights as you should ie don't noshow for any sectors and hope and pray that won't affect the rest of your flights. Then work it to your advantage by using award tickets or paid flights to position to where you really want to go with all the savings you have made.

I've done this a number of times with QF but never another airline. All I had to do was call customer service beforehand and let them know so they can put it in their system, and on my end the first segment then just shows up as greyed out.

sorry - mostly domestic but once international. On the international flight it was the second of three segments skipped due to an injury, and I was in touch with QF customer service a lot during the process. I was able to resume third leg of trip but I'm not sure if this is regular procedure or just due to extenuating circumstances.

In many ways, what matters is the fare difference between what the fare paid was, and what the fare would have been if the ticket was originally issuissue without the flight that is being skipped. These rules about taking all the segments in order are there to stop manipulation of the airlines yield management. So if skipping the flight didn't make the original fare higher, then they would have less problem amending.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the term "put it in their system" eg do you mean as in cancel that flight out of your res pnr or "greyed out" and whether you mean in reservations or checkin system but I assume the latter. All a CSA would be interested in when you arrive at the airport is that you a) have a booking on the flight and b) the eticket coupon is open for use so they can check you in. If you have noshowed on a previous flight although the CSA will be able to see your booking they won't be able to unsuspend you eticket coupon and check you in so you will be referred to the sales/ticketing desk at the airport.

Definitely the latter I would think. What they might've done was just cancel the second flight segment out of your pnr in reservations so you were therefore not a noshow for that flight hence onward flights not a) autocancelled or b) remaining flights not cancelled but remained eticket coupons suspended (not allowing you to checkin). If you assume this is regular procedure things will start to unravel quickly.

Any change or cancellation made through reservations should result in them repricing the fare for the new journey and reissuing the eticket after collecting any adcoll on he fare plus change fees etc.

Reminds me of the time when flying BA from SEA to LHR connecting via YVR was much cheaper than YVR to LHR alone. I doubted I could have joined the trip in YVR (near my home) so bought a separate 1-way ticket YVR to SEA to join the BA flight back to YVR, and still saved, albeit with two extra customs and immigration checks. No worries on the return dropping the final leg back to Seattle.

I think the best idea, which you've done, is to just adjust your itinerary to work around the cheapest fare rather than to run the gauntlet and hope the remaining sectors of your ticket don't get cancelled.

Usually dropping the last sector will be problematic as checked luggage will be checked through to final (if no stopover). In your case as you would have to collect luggage in YVR before SEA, it’s easy.
