I am flying a leg on BA, booked via Qantas and I am wondering if you are able to use your FF points to request an upgrade?

No you can not. You can only use your points to upgrade on QF flight number operated by QF.

But I think that you can use AAdvantage miles to upgrade on BA and IB which is another advantage of AA over QF

While I couldn't upgrade on any my recent AY flights with my points, I guess, due to my OWS status I got a very suprising free upgrade from Y to J at the gate for my HEL-BKK flight (and I kind of needed it after having no sleep the previous night and eating something dodgy in the FinnAir Lounge!)

While I am not sure about BA in particular, if the flight is fully booked your OW status may play in your favour (however slight the chance, I grant).

I have recently looked into this topic myself as I am travelling with partner to Rome next year in prem Y and wanted to upgrade using my lake of QFFs to J. Not possible after several calls to those lovely ladies at Qantas.

HOWEVER, apparently BA sometimes offers heavily discounted paid upgrades at check-in so that may be an option, albeit not with QFFs.

The last 'heavily discounted' upgrade I was offered on BA was BOS-LHR from Y+ to J, for a steal... $800 for an 8 hour flight.

I almost laughed when they offered it. Definitely no bargain IMHO.

It's a bit of a joke really given QF have dropped routes in favour of using a BA bird...
