Pretty simple one - I want to change routing from BNE-AUH-IAD to SYD-AUH-IAD to get on the A380. I will have to cancel + redeposit points and make a new booking. SYD-AUH has a seat available for the same date but there is none on the AUH-IAD leg. So the question: does anyone know if my seat on the AUH-IAD flight will come available for me to rebook after I cancel the original award booking?

Try calling VA and ask them to split the booking keeping the AUH-IAD on the original in place. Ask them to hold your new SYD-AUH booking before canceling and returning your points from the BNE so you can pay for the new booking. I don't know what sort of layover you get from the new itinerary?? From memory BNE arrives at 6am for a 9am connector and SYD arrives at midnight for a 02:30am connector.

Better check what day you actually arrive as it may be the same day as opposed to the next day.

Won't be able to do that as it was one award redemption not two separate. It seems like I am going to have to wait until another seat on the AUH-IAD flight opens up and hope the SYD-AUH seat isn't taken. There may be a chance of that really close in to departure.

Or maybe I have always redeemed in separate legs for this very reason. I call and double check though.

Was 187k points this way verses 282k for separate so quite a huge "saving" but obviously at the loss of this flexibility.
