Cancel/skip last sector in itinerary

Hi all,

I have a multi-city booking from PER > LAS (via SYD, LAX) in Dec 2022, returning LAX > PER (via MEL) in Feb 2023. I've had a change of plans and I'm wanting to stop in Melbourne for a few days before coming back to Perth. I called Qantas to ask if I can change my last sector MEL > PER to a later date, however since they are married segments it is not possible. Since I will have to collect baggage and clear customs on arrival in Melbourne, what is the consequence of skipping my onward flight to Perth? I would plan to purchase a separate one-way ticket or classic reward to Perth.

Some options I'm thinking of:
  • Calling Qantas to see if the can cancel my last sector
  • Informing Qantas on arrival in Melbourne (possibly charged a no show fee?)
  • Not informing Qantas and just leaving the airport in Melbourne
Any help or experience in this space is appreciated!

Sounds like you’ve already tried option 1 without success?

Anyway, I wouldn’t make a habit of option 3 but IMHO, option 2 would be the way to go. Say you can’t make it they *might* even rebook that sector.

Don't even think of talking to QF until you arrive in Melbourne.

Here's your conversation: "Unfortunately, I've became sick on arrival and am too unfit to travel. I'll be recuperating until I'm fit to travel."

Oh and I have my luggage so no problems there. Thank you and good bye.

Just ask LAX staff to 'short tag' the bags to MEL and just check you in to MEL. Then just don't turn up for the MEL-PER sector.
Even if you made a habit of it, I've never heard of a case where Qantas is going to bill you for it or ban or anything else really.
Only ever heard of it happening on some European airlines.

Either way even if they did check you in all the way though you'd still need to collect your baggage in MEL. Baggage would be automatically cancelled off at -20 if they haven't been sighted at the domestic terminal and then you'd simply be taken off the flight near departure time. May get a call, you may not. Either answer and tell them you're not travelling or don't answer, it will be the same outcome anyway

add US airlines to the list… circumventing fare or ticketing rules is frowned upon there. People have had their FF programs closed when multiple breaches have been identified.

Agree with others… just leave the airport in MEL and if asked say you aren’t feeling well.

technically it could be seen as an attempt at "hidden city" ticketing (as above) even though it isn't in this case but this is the reason to perhaps not make a habit of it. It's much more of an issue in the US though and some US airlines do keep track.

Anyway you are in the ideal situation here since you have to stop in MEL anyway. I'd either checkin in in LAS/LAX to check you through to MEL only, or once in MEL just cancel the final segment (be courteous to QF and at least tell them rather than no show imo).

of course you'd then need to get yourself back to PER....
