Cancelled flight - Krisflyer miles expiry?

G'day,

Family medical dramas mean that the flights bought using miles need to be cancelled :(

Could someone better versed in the dark arts of miles expiry please explain how the points refund might work, given:

  • Some points would originally have expired by now (yet, if I hadn't used them, they'd have been "extended", repeatedly).
  • Some points were from an expensive paid top-up to reach the required number.
Is it better to cancel sooner (before the new year?) or leave it closer to the flight date (late April)?

I know there are other threads around this subject, but I can't find anything that explains what happens with miles that were put into a booking, but would have been extended anyway (and the extension policy is continuing ... but am I left out of that, because I used the miles???)

THANKS!

PS: In terms of rescheduling - it would be nice, but can't know if possible in terms of family members ... and, the flight would need to be fitted in after trying to secure impossible QF points partner flights  (Yep, the I've now got to cancel all the hen's-teeth flights secured with QF points, in J ... to Europe and back ... in 2023, the Year of Impossible 😭 ... happy Qantas & partners! 😖 )

Thanks for the quick reply, Elite!

Any recommendations on how to get an experienced agent??? ;)

(Also... is there any reason to rush on this, as I doubt there's any material difference in expired points in the next few months towards the flight date).

Thanks for the advice ... now I have to face up to whether I cancel the QF booked flights to save on cancellation fees, or hold out "just in case" (and to limit the profiteering by the airlines!!! Reward tickets I paid a few thousand for (in over-the-top "taxes") will get resold for $30,000  )

I am living that nightmare right now. I had miles expiring Jun/Jul 2022. Booked a ticket for my parents before the expiry for flights in Apr 2023.

They decided to change their plans and therefore I had to cancel the booking in Feb 2023. Just noticed miles were deposited back into the account and they were expired on the same day.

Called SQ and I was advised *confidently* that the mile extension program was only applicable to 'unused' miles; as the miles were used to book the tickets, they are not eligible for extension! So I decided to HUCA, but I thought I ask here whether there is a way to get a hold of a competent agent?

Out of curiosity did you pay the cancellation/redeposit fee?

I don't like your chances of getting the miles. WHile it may have been debatable previously, this scenario is now clearly answered on their website.

I’ve cancelled my redemption booking. Why have I not been refunded the full amount of KrisFlyer miles redeemed when making the booking?

Miles that have already been utilised for redemption will not be eligible for extension. If you have made a redemption booking and subsequently cancelled it voluntarily, any refunded miles will follow the date of expiry at the time of booking.

This clause has been added on for this final mile extension. Previously never mentioned that miles used for a redemption would not be extended. So while you still had to fight to have them reinstated, they would eventually be recredited to your account.

But if it wasn't for this final mile extension then the miles would have definitely expired.

So you'd be relying on this final mile extension to support your argument to extend miles yet this final mile extension also comes with the added clause that redeemed miles won't be extended.

Anyway, no harm in trying to fight it.

I believe SQ is very strict on expired miles and if you cancel a flight after the expiry date of the miles you used, they will be forfeited. I would be happy for you if you get an exception but I think it is unlikely.

By the bye, I may be selfish but I would not cancel travel for a family medical drama.
