I was originally planning on flying VA at 8am from BNE to MEL on Friday. Ended up flying down with QF Wednesday morning instead and holding out for VA to cancel the flight so I can get a refund on my lite booking.. Cancellation text came through last night so made the right call to leave earlier.

The US Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Centre, I find, has better long terms forecasts for Cyclones... they are currently showing it dropping down to 45 knots Wednesday and 35 knots before it crosses the coast, so I think that is barely a Category 1. It will still mean some disruption to airport operations I'd expect.

Google JTWC to find the site. I figure the US Navy has far more compute power than BOM for these things.

Seems they not that accurate

I don’t like your chances, latest modelling will see a new track map released shortly showing the crossing taking place Saturday morning now.
Yeah I suspect that the plan will be impacted significantly. Id say the voyage will be delayed at least a day anyway if it runs at all and that will allow me more time to get up there

What is the predicted timing for Alfred's landfall compared with the timing of high tide?
The latest forecast map has Alfie at Straddie at 7pm tomorrow night, high tide at 16:17, low tide at 22:17, and the bigger high tide is at 5:18 on the 8th.

I just called Qantas to change our flights for BNE-SYD-AKL-SYD-BNE this weekend for the AFF dinner.
Limited availability coming back means we're on QF4 at ungodly hour on Sunday morning, but I guess that means we'll have some time to do the Sunday chores at home!
The agent kept offering the BNE-AKL-BNE direct flights, even though I told him we were going through Sydney for the extra SCs.
He got it all sorted very well, and I managed to get us on QF3 over instead of the last flight SYD-AKL (landing around 1am), when I asked if the face bucket would be waived due to the cyclone (we had D tickets and hopefully some magic remaining in them). 😇 😉

Took down the swimming pool shade sail this morning - preventing it from becoming an Alfred Sail tomorrow and needing to collect it from the next suburb on Saturday.

Synoptic chart from BoM showing the H in the Tasman Sea blocking Alfred from continuing south. Also there's a L trough passing through nsw.
If Alfred slows down enough or stops for a few days, it could then recommence its relatively harmless south trajectory (and dissipate over the cooler sea). Bad luck it wasn't a few days later to save $billions devastation. Screenshot_20250306-083813.png

If it had been 4am or 7am tomorrow I reckon we had a chance of flying to Adelaide on Saturday morning but now that it is 4pm tomorrow arvo I think that our chances are slim.

We have until midnight tonight to cancel hotel. I'll keep an eye on how the track changes.

We'll let Qantas cancel the flight so that we can (should) get a full refund.

If by chance we still fly I'll just book a last minute hotel. Otherwise I'll be making a claim with Amex for all of the Fringe tickets that we've bought :(

It stopped last night , backtracked a few k's then did a little loop and is now heading in very slowly…anything could happen

What did you change them to? I'm doing similar this weekend via Melbourne.

For those seeking a nuts 'n bolts met experience, as opposed to the retail media hype, JTWC has the best I can find.

On the new track posted above you can see that by now severe winds are starting to roar on the Gold Coast - the dark red line has crossed the coast.
So wind forecasts on Saturday morning. Now looking like flights may not be restarted.

Mrs BigJohn had been making frantic calls to VA about tonight's flight out of BNE.

She managed to change it to this morning to 9 am local time.

Just waiting for her to get home early and complain about my housekeeping skills !

The dark red line is the 24 forecast for destructive winds. It’s not current right now (the solid red circle is right now).

But yes the weather has definitely started here on the Gold Coast. I’m watching the waves from my balcony, they are huge!

These latest track maps put the path pretty close to a direct hit on BNE. maybe with 10kms of the terminal buildings.
