In case anyone needs to cancel award tics booked with AA miles, you need to call them to manually do it. Otherwise you may not get your miles back into your account.

I went online and cancelled my award booking as that was available on the website but didn't see the miles returned to my account for 6 days (it should be fairly immediate if done properly). Only when I called was I told that award booking cancellations need to be done over the phone.

Lucky their call centre is competent!

Yes I had the same issue. Had to call AA after cancellation to get miles and taxes refunded. Not sure why that is the case. But at least their call centre is quick to reach.

I recently experienced this issue with a QF flight I had booked as an AA award. The awards agent who helped me told me that the refunds are often not automatic with partner flights, and require manual processing by AA.

Maybe I was just unlucky with the operator I got. Last week I cancelled an AA award flight on Qantas Domestic and, when the miles were not returned, I phoned. The operator told me they would be returned within 24 hours. 5 days later still no sign of the miles. Is the only option to call until they are returned? Any particular time of the day better to get a skilled operator? Thx
