Qantas can be really good when they want to...

My in laws were due to fly home today. However, MIL was hit by gastro this morning.

They were on a red-e ticket and after double checking T&Cs to confirm they’d lose the full value my FIL called to cancel the tickets just 1hr 40m before departure.

To our surprise they were offered a credit, minus 2x$99 change fees. They’re both PS so there wasn’t even special status treatment.

I guess it may have been the luck of the draw with the CSA, or the recent ACCC remarks about airlines and consumer law are having an impact. Either way, well done QF. My in laws are very appreciative.

And of course I’m delighted they’re still here without a return ticket.

That's great of QF
The inconsistency continues!

Anyway might be time to use some of your points for a J flight back for the in-laws:)

In my experience Qantas staff are willing to assist where illness is involved.

They have helped me in the past. And in my case they waived change fees which were around $200 at the time.

Great outcome. Having said that, it REALLY is in the interest of Qantas not having contagious passengers on the flight in the the first place.

This is standard procedure, anything less would be going against their own fare rules. The main thing is to get offloaded off the flight before check in closes - what you do with the ticket is something that can be dealt with separately later after the original flight departs.

Wonder if the word "gastro" helped the process.

My friends kids in Qld came down with it over the weekend as well, its not been pretty. Hope MIL is feeling better soon.

Inconsistency? 12 months ago I, while still then a WP, was diagnosed with pneumonia the night before a domestic flight We got on to Qantas at 1.00am on the day to cancel. I was told no refund, as per the rules, even with the change fee, and did my dough except for the taxes. Maybe it depends on who you get on the phone.

Yesterday, 3 hours before departure, I had to cancel our per-adl flights as the flygirl had a dose of gastro and bad headache.
We had red E tickets and when I mentioned we were waiting for the doc to come and see my wife, Qantas put the unused portion of the fare on hold for us.
I rebooked this morning and the only cost was the $99 each, plus a fare difference, which travel insurance have already said they will pick up, minus a $250 excess.
All in all, a good outcome.
