Cancelling Red e-Deal

Hi there,

just trying to work out my options here. I understand that when I cancel a red e-deal fare prior to the day of departure I will receive a voucher and when using it the $99 change fee will be charged. So will the voucher be for the full amount paid or excluding taxes? For example, if I book a flight with a total cost of $1000 and cancel, will I receive the full $1k?

And what will happen if I don't use the full voucher value? Will a second residual voucher be issued and does that one attract an additional change fee?

The voucher will be for the full amount. The $99 will be assessed on redemption.

Gift vouchers get a reissue if the residual amount is over $2. I am not sure about such for cancellations (I did think the fare had to be higher.)

The fare can be similar or higher value but is generally the fare less GST they use for comparison purposes.

I think needs to used up in one go so no residual airfares.

I'm not sure what type of airfare you've purchased but also look at getting a refund less change fees if possible instead of credit shell.

In my experience you get the full value of the ticket value including taxes in the voucher, and the change fee is applicable when you redeem.

Haven't had an instance of having to be issued with a residual voucher from a refund voucher but I assume it works the same as a gift voucher considering QF customer care can't seem to tell the difference between them.

A supplementary question on this - within 24 hours of a booked Red E Deal flight, do you cancel or just no show ? I assume it is good form to release a seat for someone else (especially if you’ve nabbed Row 4), and if you No Show you don’t points/status credits ?

The antagonist in me says why do them a favour when they clearly sway all the rules in favour of them other times. also I guess that is why standby exists so they fill a seat last minute when a no show happens.

I wouldn't give them opportunity to sell the seat if I'm not going to get any refund.

And no SCs/points if you don't fly that sector.

To try and sell the same seat more than once? Very poor reason to inconvenience people if all turn up.

If overselling occurred because those on flexible airfares changed plans at the last minute that's a different story.

I've heard of the term overselling and I thought it was due to those on flexible tickets not turning up at the last minute and getting full refunds and seat remains unsold.

I called Qantas several weeks ago about cancelling a red e deal booking I'd made to SIN and the fee that she calculated resembled the national deficit of Guinea-Bissau (well more than the cost of the original ticket anyway).

You can avoid the change fee but not cancellation fee.

I was surprised to see the domestic change fee had gone up to $99 and I had to recently change 3 bookings.

And I was shocked last month when I made one way booking to SIN to see the change fee was $400 which pretty much renders the refund useless if you had to cancel.

Don't think you'll find it written anywhere. You generally get until midnight of the day you booked to make any changes free of charge.
