Cancelling WestJet classic reward - will WestJet refund the bag and seat fees?

Hi all
Booked a WestJet flight using classic rewards as the price was insane and their black Friday sale didn't cover our travel dates. Of course, 3 days later they have now extended their black Friday dates and the flight is a good price if we book direct.

We paid for baggage and seats directly through WestJet. If I cancel the classic reward, will the seats and bags be refunded? I've submitted a query to WestJet as well but thought I'd ask on here while I wait.

If they are refunded, will it be automatic? And will they be refunded to my card or to WestJet travel bank?

Also any tips on how to cancel and avoid the 6000 point fee? The flight was only 10k points per person 🙄

Only if the flight is cancelled. The same applies to the 6000 points cancellation penalty.

That's what I thought too, but then I found this on the WestJet website:

Flights with prepaid checked bags can be cancelled online and bag fees will be refunded except when an UltraBasic fare has been purchased, which is a 100% non-refundable fare with no change options allowed.

Flights with prepaid checked bags can be changed online and pre-paid bag fees will be carried over to your new flight except when an UltraBasic fare has been purchased, which is a 100% non-refundable fare with no change options allowe d.

You might just have to trade the risk to find out! Depends how much you want the better flights. Nothing much that can be done about the 6k cancellation fee unfortunately. Think if it as insurance!

Up to you but a 6k point cancellation fee for a 10k point flight seems like a bit of a hit. I would want the cash fare to be real cheap to cancel !

It was. We had a separate WestJet flight booked as a flex fare. The price of that went so low, that we could cancel and rebook, and then use the leftover money we had saved (which was refunded in the form of WestJet travel credit) to book the second flight. Had no other use for WestJet travel credit so it did make sense in the end. I got the refund from Qantas and followed up WestJet today for the refund of our seats and bags. Allegedly those funds have been processed so it seems like it all worked out on the end 😊
