And as a follow-up, taxes component was refunded within a few days. Received email confirmation the refund had been processes within 48 hours of cancelling old flights, and seen in the credit card on-line transaction history within another 48 hours.

And I came out $0.14 ahead ($0.07 per pax) due to exchange rate variations :).

And another follow-up on my upcoming AAdvanatge Awards bookings, and how easy it is to deal with AA when needed ...

One my my flights (ORD-LEX) had an aircraft change which resulting in my F cabin, so we were moved to the next flight that would be operated by a 2-calss aircraft.. This was about 8 hours later and would have resulted in arrival into LEX about 11pm.

So I phoned AA USA number to seek more suitable alternatives. My choices seemed to be:
  • Accept a downgrade to Coach and seek miles refund after the flight
  • Accept the later flight per the automatic change
  • Change to ORD-CVG
  • Change to non-direct routing ORD-CLT-LEX
The first two were the least desirable. AAgent tried to change us to ORD-CVG but computer said "no" as it was a change of routing and the PNR included later flights (ORD-LEX, LEX-CLT-TPA, TPA-SAN-SFO). Only option for change to CVG was to cancel (for full refund or miles/taxes) and rebook. But the rebook cost was significantly more miles that original book from several months ago.

AAgent asked of indirect via CLT was ok. Meant we leave ORD about 15 mins earlier and arrive at LEX about an hour later than original flights. Perfect option for us. Larger aircraft (B738, A319 rather than E175). Flights are only 2hr and 1hr11m and at quite reasonable timings.

Change was made and ticket reissued while I was on the phone (32 mins totcal callt time) late Sunday evening/early morning USA time). No change to miles or taxes for the change.

Dealling with AA (via USA phone number) is SOOOOO much better than playing roulette with award booking changes through Qantas.

Again used my 28 Degrees Master Card today for an AAward booking - all on-line.

I was notified today of a change to one of my upcoming AAward bookings - a new flight number and slightly different departure/arrival times (within 10 mins or so of original). I noticed this change also involved a different aircraft type. So the original single-class E145 had become a 2-class CRJ700. So I made a new award reservation for 2 people in the F cabin and put it on hold. Then cancelled the original Y cabin booking. Miles were immediately returned to my account.

Then went back to the new on-hold booking and paid using 28 Degrees card, entering zip-code as 04xx_ and state as Maine. Payment successfully processed and new tickets issued immediately.

All done on-line on aa.com site.

This confirms a few things I really like about AAdvantage:
  • Award reservations can be placed on-hold for 5 days with no penalty or cost
  • Award booking can be cancelled without any penalty
  • Award booking cancellation result in immediate return of miles to account
  • Immediate ticket issue of award flight and ticket number provided

QFF could learn a lot from AAdvantage in terms of being member-friendly.
You are a star. I had to call AA to book my last trip after trying several browsers, Ipad, phones and android devices to try and make payment go through, as I had all the Problems by others mentioned above. After reading your post, I used my postal code , added a zero and looked up the zip code code to find It is in Massachusetts. I entered my New Zealand address , post code with a zero in front and MA as the state and the booking went straight through, super easy . THANK YOU. AKL-BER for 85,000 AA here I come

^ the cancellations for me aren't usually immediate return if the PNR contains partner flights. Have to call up to ask for manual processing.
