Hey all~

Does anyone have experience with car rental in New Zealand? Looking to rent a car (compact will do), for around 6 days, pickup and drop off in Auckland. The big companies like Hertz and Avis are quoting around 650+ NZ...around 100 a day! Is this the usual going price?

Any ideas to minimize price or any tips about New Zealand car hire? We would really love to drive and see the landscapes etc.

Thanks again

Look around - picking up at AKL has it's own Airport fee of around $40.

Hi peachy3333
Check apex car rentals. They rent used cars, ie Ford Foccus 2006-2007 for a good price. They don't have the office at AKL but will pick you up at arrival.

I just had a quick look at hertz, using the Qantas Frequernt Flyer CDP I got $400 for 6 days for a group B in March picking up from the airport.

Also check Ace Rentals. I have used them numerous times. The cars are reasonable (older models) and have never given us any trouble.

Also, if possible in your situation, look for an agency off airport. Many agencies will provide free pick up and drop off from airport if they are just outside the airport zone. This would save you the airport fees, but adds time in arrival and departures.

Not based on price but suggest you have a read of NZ based web site Rankers- gives excellent feedback on vehicles & activities for NZ

I used u-save last week and there prices were much better than the big players. They give you a toll free number to call when you get in and they come and pick you up.
Another company that has cheap rentals is Jucy rentals. Just plug either into google and see what you can find.
