Hi all
I need to leave a car at SYD International for 13 days while going to LA as I live 3 hrs drive away from SYD.
What do you recommend?

Try the various options at Sydney airport and long term car park. They now give online discounts, I think the T1 looked ok for them.
Also try park n fly. They have an offsite car park and mini buses to the termainls, have found they are really good for shorter term stays. Also do car washes etc
Some of the hotels use to do park and transport but havent seen any ads for a while.

What type of car do you have?

I am thinking if it is not a real flashy car there could be other cheaper options.

$130 for parking at the airport for 13 days is a small price to pay IMHO when you will be in a hurry to get home after a long flight back from LA then a 3 hour drive, I have to admit it was cheaper than I thought it would be !

If it is only $130 it is a bargain. I was thinking park in a side street and walk to the airport but it is not worth it for $130.

I stand corrected, its $186 in the long term or $240 at the International Terminal, that might make a bit if difference!

The Mecure and Holiday Inn have a stay and park package with transfers for around $250 which gives you 7 days of parking, extra nights are around $10, that may be a more relaxed option if you can afford the night away.

That's a good price for parking at T1, and as I have a trip for a couple of weeks coming up could you please post the website from which you got the quote for $130. I can only get quotes of over $200.

Spooky! This is just what I was going to ask. I also live 3 hours from Sydney and am about to go to NZ for 11 days.

I'm looking at websites and some of the places make me think of the Dodgy Brothers! And I would prefer not to hand over my keys to them while I'm away. I know, I hand over my keys when my car gets serviced......

Does anyone have a preferred car park or should I park at the airport long stay and spend alot more but at least keep my keys on me?

There is the option to catch a coach which is $48 each way. The bus up is fine. The bus back leaves at 0940 or 1545. If the Lan Chile flight is on time I'll be fine. If I miss the early bus will be a long wait till the second one.

Have you thought of parking in the Mascot area and leaving the car for 11 days for free?

No.

I have been thinking of leaving my car at work HQ in Kogarah. I could leave the keys in the safe. Drop my luggage at the hotel, park at Kogarah then run back to the hotel.

This should work out cheaper than parking at the airport and easier than taking the b*s;).

As a rule taking the b*s should never be considered.

In 2008 I caught 2 buses from the same company. One was down to the snow and the driver thought he had everyone and we were in Jindabyne by the time he got the word. Unfortunately the driver wouldn't drop us at a bar while he drove back to the Ski Tube. A few months later I had to catch a bus from Batemans Bay to Canberra. SAME DRIVER!!! He forgot the dry cleaning so we had to go back to the Bay (luckily he hadn't driven too far). Then when we got to Canberra he offloaded all this luggage in Kingston which should have stayed on to Jolimont. Should have seen the looks on faces when people realised what had happened.

Fortunately Ulladulla is serviced by a different company so no chance of that driver :D. I am thinking I will ring work and see if the bosses are ok with me leaving my car.

This would not suit everyone but how about leaving the car at a car park along the 400 bus route or even the train stations.

The car parks I can think of along the 400 bus route are Rockdale Station and Bexley North pub/shopping centre. Don't think there is a time limit.

Also Kingsgrove railway station car park, Bardwell Park railway station car park (actually part of Bardwell Park RSL car park) and Earlwood car park (about 5 minute walk from Bardwell Park station) are fairly secure and no time limit from memory. Airport is only a few stops away on the train.

Can drive past on the weekend and have a look at more details if anyone is interested.

That was my thought John. When I lived in Mascot cars would often be parked near my house (High St) for days and then a family would show up with luggage and the car would go and it was easy to see what they had done.

Be easier to beg forgiveness from the Dragon after the event. Just let a co worker know and leave the keys with them. In fact, let a co-worker use the car on condition of a drop off and pick up the terminal.

If you have the option then two 'cheap' one way rentals may work for you and that way your car is safely in bed at home.

When adding in the extra charges for two one-way, away from base rentals + the time taken to rent the car (and return it), then I really wonder if the cost is worth the hassle of it in the first place.

When we travel within Australia we often leave our cars at the airports long-term car-park, and happily pay the extra $5 per day to park under the covering - means we get only a very small smearing of jet exhaust gunk all over it. And yes, we do get to take our keys with us, and the free bus trip is reliable, fast and frequent.

As for international travel, fortunately we don't live anywhere near 3hrs from Sydney. Macquarie is ripping off customers with the whole range of exhorbitant parking fees in the intl and dom terminals - but at least undercover secure parking is also peace of mind - and you get back into your own car, and drive away in something very familiar.

Mind you - I think anyone who intends to drive after a long-haul trip is somewhat looney: when friends of ours travel to Sydney from the UK we pick them up at the airport, take them home for a good nights rest and then let them continue their trip (5 hrs from Sydney) the next day in the car they left at our place to start with, all refreshed and alert and far less likely to be the latest road fatality statistic.

Mind you - it all depends on your circumstances and choices and costs you are prepared to pay - when we travel together overseas (1-2 times a year for 3-5 weeks at a time) we find that for peace of mind and efficiency then it is well worth getting a good limo services to pick us up and whisk us away - have been using the same company since 2006 and except for one small hick-up have received great service - not that much more costly to Norwest than by taxi, but a clear cut above even silver service.

As I said - all depends on your own preferances and choices.

Thank you everyone for the advice. Driving home from Canberra this afternoon I was resigned to catching the bus. I changed my mind and although costing more have gone the prepaid option at Sydney International.

I thought about parking at work but given we often only have as little as 5 people working somedays my car would be noticed. Most of the bosses are laid back, but there are a couple I don't know well enough who might crack it at the car park being used as a car park.

It's all booked and paid for. Am attempting to pack but am watching The Pacific. Getting frustrated at it because although the show is well made, I have been to Guadalcanal and it just isn't the same. I better get back to packing.

The bus, Canberra to/from SYD isn't really that bad.
First stop is the international terminal and it's about the same time as driving yourself.
The bonus is that the fares start at only $15 one way!!! More money to spend on hols :D
