Car rental extortionate deductible

Recently hired an EV in Perth for 6 days for a reasonable price with full claim deductible (excess) protection. However want to hire a car for 2 days in Adelaide and presented with maximum deductible of $7,500 or can purchase protection to reduce the deductible to $2000 for $55 per day, on a car that has a new price of about $55K.

My multi-trip Allianz TI cover maxxes out at $5000 and doesn't apply for local car rentals. Google searching uncovered RentalCover.com for about half the fee charged by Sixt, Hertz etc. and apparently with fewer exclusions.

Do other use this company or others? Any other ideas on handling this aspect of domestic travels?

The AmEx Explorer LDW doesn't have an excess cover. It covers anything up to a max vehicle value of $100k. Gotta be careful accepting an upgrade!

I’ve used RentalCover.Com before, seemed good to me but then didn’t have to claim!

Without making a specific recommendation Choice does suggest these excess rental insurance firms are better value than the car hire firms. I doubt they would do so if they had any serious concerns.

Looked to get a Polestar in London, cheap daily rate.

Unfortunately the excess was essentially the price of the car (~GPB40,000)…….

Didn’t go for that option……
