Carry-on boarding etiquette

Didn't know what it was ... had to Google .. I did not take this test before ...
It's gone out of favour, apparently everyone (me) thinks they all look like their horrible boss who's been murdered and dismembered.
Back to carry-on, I often fly bne-syd last minute, cheap, and light (phone, tablet and headphones). I'm on JQ tomorrow at a time I like (mid afternoon), booked just yesterday $99, nice.
But this time carrying more so acquired perfect size (ie jq max) carry-on bag. Weighed when I got home, 3kg, almost ½ the allowance. Gee.
So when I saw the stripey bags today at the art gallery it made me think. But no, I won't sink that low, an AFFer might report me

If you want good practice in swinging your backpack, Sydney trains are good for that. Where there are five seats across, the isle is so narrow that you have to mind your movements and stay centered to ensure the spacing between your bag and other people.

I usually carry my backpack in my hand from the bus stop, platform or front galley to my seat. On the way out, put it back on only when there are empty isle seats so I won't hit anyone (and sometimes that's well into the aerobridge, station platform or street).
