Can you take a sewing machine through domestic airport security (ex Adl) ....it meets QFs carryone allowance (weight). Obviously there is the attached needle. Thanks

Honestly, I would suggest contacting Qantas to see what they say. I know I've had items confiscated from my carryon that I didn't think were contraband such as a multitool for my bike. Regardless of what Qantas tells you by phone though, you are really threading the needle here as security officers at airports are given quite a bit of discretion on what stays and what flies. So I would advise you to be prepared to check the sewing machine in worse comes to worse (i.e. having a properly padded luggage ready)

Yes. Will remove the needle. If security won't allow it, my mum will take it home
Sounds like a plan but even removing the needle is no guarantee since the security officer has final discretion on items and what may look perfectly acceptable to the outside observer may not be to the security officer. Remember they're tasked with finding needles in haystacks! 😅

Knitting needles are usually allowed but a work colleague had her tweezer confiscated. There was a risk she might pluck someone to death…

But more importantly, will there be room in the overlocker? 😀
I thought this thread might have been a stitch up.

Young lady in 3C on VA recently was knitting with a huge pair/set (?) of pointy knitting needles that looked more like a weapon than plenty of items on the banned list.

She should be asked to be the "gatekeeper" if the aircraft didn't have the dividing rope...

No issues at Adl domestic security

I first read this as Aldi domestic security and thought, Oh, shes flying Jetstar 🤣

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. I remember one flight someone brought a cooked Christmas ham on the flight so I guess theyve seen it all.

Ha! This triggered a memory for me. I was in 4D. Two Yx pax wanted, and were permitted, to use the J toilets. Both were initially pointed towards the back of the bus by the hostie ("They're for business class only") but after saying something like "I don't want to go all the way down there", the hostie caved in "all right then". One was an elderly lady so common sense prevailed, quickly thankfully, but the younger pax pressed until the hostie relented.

Sorry this is off topic but I'm out of sewing puns.

@kpc I think you may have made it harder for us SA based PAX to get through security ;) Now we may have to remove laptops, aerosols, iPads, umbrellas, sewing machines ;):p and any other thing they may come up with.

I had a work colleague who had a softball and glove in her carry on (going to a competition) and they were picked up - I think she ended up wrapping them and checking them in. I have been quizzed on tweezers (though the woman on the security line laughed and let them through). I also had a letter opener taken (luckily not of any value and so not a problem and I had forgotten it was there - could not put it in check in as only travelling with a large handbag for overnight. I did also take a toaster in carry on - caused quite a deal of amusement.

What I want to know is how your sewing machine got under the carry on weight limit?
I might need to take one wandering
Fred

Australia just has a rather boring list of prohibited and allowed items:

The US actually has a searchable site:

Sewing Machine is actually listed on the TSA site.

It weighed 9kg...Qf allows a piece of carryon to weigh 10kg...anyway no one blinked or even asked what it was when I brought it on board :) ....it was starting to give me a sore arm though carrying it around the airport terminal
