Hi,
I've booked a family trip to Europe through HK (as it's surprisingly much much cheaper) with separate tickets Cathy SDY-HK and Qatar HK-DOH-CDG.

On the way over we land at 3pm and leave just after midnight so would prefer to check the bags through rather than clear customs, collect bags and re-check in. Does anyone have experience with Cathay at Sydney Airport and the ability to check the bags all the way through? Do I just show my onward ticket?

Thanks for any help!

Show your CX and QR e-tickets to the check-in agent, they will be able to check you through all the way to CDG.
Bags will be tagged to CDG as well.

Can anyone confirm if this would be OK in reverse? I.e check in with QR (in my case in BER) then change to CX in HKG.
I'll probably go HLO anyway but could end up with stuff to bring back
(Ive had QR check through at SYD to a separate AY ticket in HEL before)

In the worst case, its very easy to do it yourself as well. Last time I had to do this at HKG, I was rechecked in and bag dropped 40 mins after our plane pulled up to the gate and headed off to the city to meet a friend before getting back for a 1am departure.

QR does offer through check on separate tickets so it should be fine. In any case, I believe the CX transfer desk at HKG should be able to pull your bags for you without problem if you don't wish to go landside.
