Cathay Pacific Economy Seats Extremely uncomfortable

I flew 70,000 miles last year, and this seat was the only seat that I couldn't get any sleep in. I usually sleep well enough on flights even in Y - some years ago, I slept for 6 hours on a 10 hour JQ flight.

Their A380 is a half shell seat, and I found it quite nice.

Mmmmm don't have a sector in Y on the A380 till August but will have a wander downstairs to have a look at them in April. I have only heard good comments from friends that flew in the QF version. CX must have done something wrong!

Actually the old regional CX product (777) which has hard upper, soft lower, was much better than the "new"medium haul seating on the 330.

I like the new QF Y seats, semi-shell. As a tall person I find the fully reclining cough**le in front of me doesn't have too much of an impact on leg space, but does impede my ability to comfortably watch the IFE.

This is the reason why all airlines don't have it. The recline in economy debate always gets a good run and causes many issues between passengers - if airlines had a seat that would slide forward that was comfortable, they would all be investing in them. If a manufacturer can get the balance, then you will see more airlines getting them.

With the Qantas 388 Y seats, there's no "shell" at all.

However the seat base does slide forward ~5cm with "full" recline.

Aside from having an issue putting the seat upright when no seat in front to brace against it seems to work ok.

Having posted that, in a dozen trips I have never travelled in a 388 economy seat having a seat in front. Only 50B, 66C, 80A and 80K.

That's when you use the touch screen (and find it a bit hard to press.......)

Interesting the 380 seats can be so popular, yet the new 738 seats are awful too.

The 388 seats are different from the 73H seats.

For are start the 73H seats are shorter and there are issues with that in relation to the the back rest.

Yes, which is why it's amazing they didnt just go for the A380 seats. I assume there's some cross-compatability issue, but it's a real disappointment.

Airbus/boeing - I have seen posts elsewhere that there are issues with what seats can be put in what aircraft - "make/brand' has a lot to do with it.

It's more than "horses for courses" ...

Subsequent to said person giving the "touch" screen a thumping if they don't like me reclining I can usually see my way to spilling some of my water over them after refilling it. As far as I'm concerned the space between my self and the screen isn't mine the seat is.

The seat reclines, the person is entitled to use it. I'm 6'2" and yes its annoying but it is somewhat of a comfort to not have to sit in the exact same position for hours on end. If that means the person in front reclines as well then so be it.

Avoiding the CX shell seat was the reason my last HKG trip (ex PER) was through SIN.

I know what you mean. I know I'm blind and all, but shoving the screen right in my face is just ridiculous.

I actually agree with you re: seat recline - long overnight or late night/early morning, go for it. Middle of the day, during meals - some consideration for the person behind works wonders. I also move my seat a small fraction before reclining so that if the person behind has thier knees jammed etc they have a chance to move them before I crunch them. Unfortunately, at 6'5", others dont always show me the same consideration.

(I was tongue-in-cheek about the screen thing - although i'm sure people do that).

I have just flown CX Y LAX-HKG ( daytime 15 hours) and a few days later HKG - ADL (8 hour night flight). Having just completed LONE including QF, BA and AA sectors CX seats were by far the most uncomfortable for both day and night flights. I am 163cm and from previous reviews thought I would cope with these seats - WRONG!! DO NOT FLY CX Y until these seats change!!
Also compared to BA, QF, and AA service was terrible and state of toilets was disgusting with no toilet paper after a couple of hours into the flight and puddles of urine all over the floor. Thumbs down to CX Y from me.

Out of CNS we have these awful CX Y seats to HKG, not much choice at current fare levels as they (CX) are so much cheaper (about $400 ATM for April) than others, and rather than routing via BNE or SYD + wait times, its a direct flight of 7 hours 4 days a week, so we just have to put up with the seats, just booked two more today.

Slightly OT but wow Spieck, surprised to hear of the state of toilets. On my most recent (first flights with CX) I actually complimented the Cabain Manager on the state of cleanliness of the toilets. IMO the state of the CX toilets were far above QF & AA. Each time I used them they were extremely clean and well stocked (with toilet paper etc!) I started to wonder if they followed people in after each use and gave them a quick wipe down.

I found CX overal very good.

Toilet was clean the entire trip.

Sounds like we must have had bad luck. 2 flights with filthy poorly stocked toilets made me think it must be the norm for CX Y. My children aged 12,11 and 7 have declared they will never again fly CX in their life and the whole family has agreed we would rather cope with the inconvenience of flying home to ADL from Hong Kong by flying with QF va MEL or SYD than the direct flight with CX.

In some families 12 yr olds seem to have very powerful voices these days:), I guess it comes with experience
