Hi everyone,
Just a quick one for anyone taking a trip to Europe in J with Cathay. I did Mel - LHR in j with Cathay a few weeks ago. I absolutely loved the new J seat on the A330 from Mel-HKG but really didn't like the old J class seat from HKG - LHR. Dont get me wrong its a huge step ahead of Y which iv done many a time but If anyone is thinking of taking a similar trip or any trip with Cathay in J you should definately get a new J config plane. If your tall or broad at all then youl find the old J seat quiet narrow and not the easiest for such a long haul flight.
The new J seat would remind me of a smaller version of the Qantas F seat on the A380. This new J seat is infact (in my opinion) far superior to the Qantas J seat.

Thats all, just a heads up for people is all.

If iv put this in the wrong place apologies, and move it away.

I am flying "J" CX from HKG-LHR in July. Is there anyway you can tell if you are getting old or new seats?

Hi craven morehead,
if you are on a 747 you'll be on the old j seat. If you are on a a330 or 777 then I'm fairly sure your on a new j seat, genuinely can't recommend enough to try and get the new j seat, especially for the long London flight.
Hope it helps

Not correct unfortunately, 2 747s are refurbed with new J, the seat map is the key...

EDIT: Unfortunately I was wrong here - the 744 J update is just a refurb on the existing herringbone config

I disagree. I must be the odd one out but I did not enjoy the new CX seat at all. I've also flown QF First on the A380 and there is no comparison to CX's new sterile J product. It can't be that fabulous, CX is already working on the next J product to replace this new one.

Really I'm surprised by that. I was going mainly by Australian business traveller website which said in many articles that no 747's were being retro fitted. Also if you look at the Cathay pacific website it says it's introducing it to the a330s and 777http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_AU/whatonboard/newbusinessclasshttp://www.ausbt.com.au/the-best-seats-in-business-class-on-cathay-pacific-s-boeing-747

I would be sceptical about AusBT in some cases.

I checked the CX website and believe they don't advertise the refurbed seats, as the coffin seats are all indicated as old Jstyle.

Fair enough, each to their own opinion, I thought they were great at least. Mainly I was just saying that I felt the new j seat is far better than the old, I also feel that it is better than the j seat in qantas planes but that's just my opinion again.

Yes I agree. Better than QF, well lets say as good.

bigger IFE and more storage options. More privacy. So a competitive product.

who said they were already planning to replace them?

Seat map is your friend....however, they can change prior to your flight.

The coffin sucks. Ok for a night flight when you are totally shagged & ready to sleep the whole way. Terrible for a flight with anyone you want to talk too.

I would also prefer the new J seats on CX to those on QF. Of course the services are also more consistently better in CX and the CX lounges in HKG are far superior than the QF ones.

They have fitted the new J seats for flights between HKG and PER and also introduced prem econ seats.

Thank you all. Ok so I have checked and flight is CX253 and showing as a 777-300ER  Config appears to be 1-2-1

We have a CX J flight in May this year, HKG-LHR, CX255 which is a 747.

After reading this thread I thought I would check the seat plan, and to my surprise downstairs in J it is showing 1-2-1.

Rang Cathay and they confirmed it was herringbone seating.

I am a bit of a loss now as to what to expect.

I'm a big CX fan however, I've been pretty disappointed with the food on my last few J flights.

Not long before we get to see the new wing FC lounge........if the new J lounge is anything to go by - it's going to be a ripper.

Are you sure on that? The old J is the coffin style which I found ok but the new J is a quantum leap forward. I always try for it if I can - one of my favourite features is the ability to route my iPad through the IFE system so I can watch my own TV and Movies. I hadn't heard anything about these new seats being replaced.

They are replacing their regional J seats as well.

I do agree on the food - seem to have gone downhill a bit. Still comparable to competitors but not superior. That said the choices of dinner are good and I often eat at airport lounge (or even at HKG restaurants) before flight so not too worried about flight food. The wonton noodles made to order at the lounge are second to none - reminds me each time why Should fly CX!
