Apologies - I rechecked the information on the status on New J in the 744s, rather than a seat replacement it seems this is just a 'refresh' of the existing herringbone config.

That's excellent, I hope you really enjoy the trip. If you are traveling alone as HKGNZL said the single window seats are great.

I was on the the same flight 3 weeks ago on the 747. in the main cabin there was the 1 - 2 - 1 in the old j class seat, i was upstairs and it was a 1 -1 layout again with the old j seat. Im not sure if you can take the earlier flight which is a 777 that leaves a hour earlier from hkg. I was unable to get on this flight. Again the old j seat is a huge step up form Y but if its possible to get on the 777 flight with the new J it might be worth checking out. If not the old seat is still a full flat bed and a good service which you will still enjoy. I think upstairs on the 747 might be a nice option for you as its smaller cabin and in a 1-1 layout.

We have a CX J flight in May this year, HKG-LHR, CX255 which is a 747.

After reading this thread I thought I would check the seat plan, and to my surprise downstairs in J it is showing 1-2-1.

Rang Cathay and they confirmed it was herringbone seating.


I am a bit of a loss now as to what to expect.

I did the new CX J a few months ago and was throughly impressed. It leaves QF dead in the water. Thereafter I did a HKG-MEL flight on the QF A330 and noticed how unimpressive the QF J config is in comparison.

Just came back from LHR on CX (two days ago). First leg was 747 upstairs (coffin) and second leg was the new J. Price was significantly cheaper than QF - as a WP I lose the plat bonus on points earn due to flying CX and not QF. However, in future, even if the price was the same - I would forgo the extra points and choose CX. I was hugely impressed.

The new J gives heaps of storage options and a really long lie flat bed. The service was excellent and all the seats had direct aisle access (in both the coffin style and new J).

I was always bothered by lack of storage on QF in J (talking about A380 - not the sh*tty J to FRA or NRT) and the fact that either I was climbing over someone or someone was climbing over me. The only other advantage (besides the bonus points) for QF is the A380 which does seem to allow me to arrive fresher.

Oh - no PJs on CX either.

Better to credit to Asia Miles when flying CX as the redemption rates are almost half as much as QF

Not sure what you mean by lack of storage - I have never had storage issues in the overhead on the A380. I have only sat in 12E or 11F and never have issue with people climbing over me.

Don't get me wrong I do prefer the CX seat over the A380 seat - but for me the difference is being able to route my iPad through the IFE on CX and catch up on TV and Movies in flight.

I have done both A330 configs in CX J HKG-ADL. Have to agree with the OP - the new J seats (1-2-1) were much better IMHO. I'm a pretty big/broad dude, and the new seats just seemed roomier. And the layout just felt better.

i agree, the new seats are roomier for sitting/lounging in - where they do fall a little short for me is in lie-flat mode - you either have the choice of facing the aisle which is quite close or facing into the side of the seat, neither of which is perfect for sleeping.

Compare this with the herringbone config where if you are in a window seat I think you end up with much more room around your head and shoulders and less chance of being woken up.

I actually found them better for sleeping as well, not just lounging, as the arm rest is in an awkward spot on the older seats and everything feels tighter and strange. Maybe a bit coffin-like (if coffins had arm rests and nice CX service). I take your point about your head being closer to the aisle though.

Not the lack of large storage, but lack of personal storage during the flight. With my recent flight in CX (new J) - I had the amenities kit, water, my own reading material and macbook air in the lower storage area (under the slide out tray table) and then my wallet, passport, spectacles, immigration cards in the headset storage cabinet (as well as little things that I may need like eye drops, vicks vapodrops and sinus spray). The CX menu went into the CX magazine storage area (with the safety card, duty free info, entertainment guide etc).

During the flight, when I got up, I put the blanket on the footstool, pillow on the personal flat area above the slide out tray (I sit in a window seat) and then put my TV control and headset on top of the pillow. Easy... I wouldn't even change the bed settings.

On Qantas, I wouldn't be able to have all that stuff out and put away. Regularly- I would have a novel sharing the side of the seat with me, and I wouldn't have my computer out either. Then, when I need to go the bathroom it is an effort. I would have to move the bed settings into a seat position. I would pick blanket and pillow up in one hand with headset in the other - then carefully move myself out of my seat to not disturb the person next to me. Twist around- put stuff back on the seat and then move out. On the return it is a reverse process - not exactly easy.

Anyway- that's just me. A loyal QF flyer, who tried CX for economic reasons... and who most likely won't go back to QF for my long haul international flights.

I think I worked that out after I posted - yep I agree it would be nice to have more storage around. It is a real toss up for me between CX and QF - at the moment if small price differential the additional QF FF points edges it for me - but I certainly wouldn't be unhappy on CX (plus the new Wing F lounge will be enticing).

Personal storage. Phone headphone laptop iPad water jumper book meds. Far superior in new J on CX. Even a mirror!!
