Hey guys

after qantas butchered the status credits for its customers, I am left short to maintain platinum. I am heading off to china for a few days in July and will be going Perth to Beijing to Hong Kong to Perth. I am flying Cathay pacific as they have a direct flight from perth to Hong Kong. The question is how do I maximise status credits on this route, what's the best way to fly on other airlines. I got ripped off flying Malaysia airlines before and got no status credits because I accidentally picked the wrong class

Since Jul 14 no matter which OW airline member you fly as a QF FF member, you will lose out.
Best top tip is to fly to MEL with QF and to HKG from there to earn the most SC.
CX does not have QF flight numbers in their flight list neither does MH.
So it's a loss... flying any partner will earn less than if flying QF MEL - HKG then CX to PEK.

All well and good but the OP has clearly stated they are flying with CX direct to China/HKG.

Then have to accept that earn rate will be lower.
There is an option at the least, but yes, why spend extra time in the MEL F lounge eh if he has a bit of time left as WP.

what class of travel are you on?
say you wanted to max SCs, you could do Jetstar PER - SIN - HKG lol...

Not flying jetstar. I thought you did get SC on cathay pacific. I need to get about 100 points give or take

But PER-HKG hasn't been penalized since there is no QF flight

I am fairly sure that PER-HKG on CX has had a reduction in SC's even if it's only minimal.

Essentially to answer the OP's question, to maximise SC earn you need to be prepared to pay for it essentially. You won't earn the 100 SC's asked for on the direct flight on a discount economy fare.

Better than the 15 you would get from the east coast

BHKLMV - discY 0.50 points per mile flown
Y - Y 1:1
ERW - premY 1 : 1.1
CDIJ - business 1 : 1.25
AF - first 1 : 1.5
These are FF points earnings, you can play around with the SC earn on the site on QF website as mentioned above by our other colleagues.

If you're in economy then forget about any type of earn with qantas. Send it to another FF program.

If you're in a premium cabin there are many options for you outside QFF.

In the meantime, PER - eastern Australian state capital, will get you 80 in J with QF one way, no?
Return in whY/discY is 20.
Not cheap, but will give you that 100 SC needed.

Just returned from China on Friday, ex Perth, flying in J with CX.. SC credited within 7 days

Perth to HK = 100
HK to Shanghai = 50 (Dragon Air)

Assuming the OP has the budget and/or *time* to bother with a reroute like this. It's not all about the F lounge for some.

And if it's in July, there *may* be an option, depending on budget and/or the right fare/TA to do something like PER-SIN(QF)-HKG-BJS(CX/KA) v.v. or at least break in SIN one way, though that 73H is not very appealing for the SIN-PER v.v. legs... but an option potentially depending on the travel dates.

yes so you keep saying, but why don't you be more helpful to others here and post some examples. Many of us have a fair idea, of course, but may I humbly suggest that giving some examples or options may be more helpful to the general readers of the forum.?

Just a general thought.

Using the QF website calculator, you get 25 SC flying CX PER - HKG in whY. HKG - PEK is 15 SC.
Thats 40 SC, x 2 is 80 SC.
Doing via MEL with QF up as far as HKG, you get a SB, and 20 SC for PER - MEL, 30 SC for MEL - HKG, and HKG - PEK is 15 SC, one way, its 65 SC, double that, its 130 SC.
You mention a bit after the OP you were 100 SC short.
If you have paid for the CX fare, too late, you could still do a PER regional QF trip for 20 SC somewhere in WA.
It would be a whole different consideration if CX carried the QF code, but they dont.
