Re: Change in Platinum Card Travel Insurance?

To all these who have the "top" CC.
I have a diamond CBA one.
Last year I was travelling overseas for a couple of weeks and rang the CBA up to ascertain the facts on travel insurance.
NOTE THIS !!
Unless you spend in excess of $1000 on fares via your CC, there is not cover
.

Hi kenquid,

Welcome to AFF.

I have moved your post into the CBA Diamond card thread where it really belongs.

Re: Change in Platinum Card Travel Insurance?

This is covered by the terms and conditions of the CBA insurance policy. You can read it here:

http://www.commbank.com.au/personal/apply-online/download-printed-forms/ADB631.pdf

For international travel insurance the qualification for coverage is set out on page 9: basically you have to charge either A$950 of your prepaid travel costs to the card to the card or pay for them using CBA rewards points. Alternatively if you pay for 90% of the ticket costs on the card you are covered.

What this means is that you can activate the coverage provided you prepay $950 of travel expenses to your card, for example, by booking overseas hotel accommodation. Once you have done that you are covered and the fact you are flying on FF points becomes irrelevant.

Note that the coverage rules for Transit Accident Insurance are different. You are only eligible for this cover if you are travelling on a defined "trip" and "trip" is defined on page 5 to be trips where the ticket was charged to the card.

Mine did. :D

...so did mine, kept existing credit limit (below 18K) and confirmed in writing no annual fee for another 12 months (at least, have never paid one in 8 years yet) - thanks CBA!

Definitely a fan of the Netbank card activation + PIN assignment process. No human interaction required! :)

Goodness me. What a convoluted mess the card insurances have become over time. One can see the business case behind these T&C but from an end users perspective, and given many folks will have more than one card, its just a bad nightmare waiting to happen.

I thought about making a matrix once, where insured items were cross referenced with which card so that I could make the right spend choices on the right card to be covered for the right circumstances - but its a huge amount of work to create and a huge amount of work to maintain ... cheaper (in time) to just get decent travel insurance and get familiar with it I think.

Re: Change in Platinum Card Travel Insurance?

Have plat card...offered Diamond.....did not take up.
So is the process to get Diamond via phone SIMPLE?
What is required(no home loan) but business and personal accounts with high income over many years, to get FEE FREE?
Better to walk into bank and see manager or over the phone "going somewhere else?"

CBA normally does not provide free credit card, actually credit card fee is one of the most difficult thing to bargain. However, if you do get successful for that, please feel free to share the experience.

Branch mgr would probably be a better option.

There were multiple campaigns to boost the member base when Diamond was launched.

It's now increasingly harder to have annual fee waived for life especially if you do not have a home loan package.

Even staff members have to pay the full annual fee once they retire or resign.

The only one benefit I really see in Diamond over Plat is the SPG Gold membership from the World Mastercard. The lack of Starwood properties in Australia means I have little chance to keep up status with SPG now so this should cover me. Has anyone got this processed yet? It is still a WIP for me.

I visited the Starwood Hotels & Resorts site and it now appears to require one stay before the SPG Gold kicks in.

Shame as I could use the 4PM check-out benefit at the Westin Melbourne later this year (just after Melbourne Cup so Hyatt and Hilton are at peak rates).

Asked a very good friend who is a branch manager re waiving fees. Answer was a flat no. She said it is near impossible.

Re: Change in Platinum Card Travel Insurance?

I have a free fee Diamond. I was offered the (then prestigious) gold CBA card back in the 90s on a fee free basis. When they subsequently upgraded me first to Platinum and then Diamond the fee free status was grandfathered.

Same situation here.

Re: Change in Platinum Card Travel Insurance?

My instance is a new application as have just relocated to Australia. Can see how you'd get fee free if upgrading.
