CCard travel insurance for free flights

Hey everyone

I have a question regarding the complimentary travel insurance that comes with having most Gold Credit cards (A gold Citibank Visa in my case).

I am travelling to the UK later this year, on a flight that I won through a competition. Not having paid for this flight with my card, I would not be entitled to free travel insurance.

however, within europe I am travelling around to a few places, and have purchased each flight with my card. This means that I should have some level of insurance.

Can anyone speculate on if I am covered for the entire journey? Or only the parts of travel beginning after I travel on a journey paid with my Visa?

And what if I catch a cab to the airport and pay with my Visa before I depart (and hence, have had the first journey of my trip paid for with the gold card, giving me insurance for the rest of the journey?). After all, some parts of anyones travel may be free (walking, friends cars), and surely this kind of insurance covers them.

I will preface this by saying I am definitely not an expert . However, I have a CBA Plat MC, which also offers free travel insurance for travel paid for on the card. I am doing a US trip in Sept booked on points, but with the taxes/fines paid for on the card. I rang and queried if the insurance would apply, but was told clearly that only travel fully paid on the card was eligible for the insurance. So I don't like your chances.

I too am not an expert but I checked with citibank on my up coming trip to europe and was told all payments are to be fully paid with the card. So I had airfrares and 2 hotels thru TA. I then said what about some nights that currently aren't booked because we don't know where will stay. She said make sure they accept Visa and PAY with the card otherwise if pay any other way the insurance is null and void. If you claim they want full details of travel and acommodation for all nights. Only exception is staying with family I was told.

ANZ seems to the one of the only CC card insurances that you don't have to pay for your tickets on the card, even pre-paying $250 on accomodation is enough to get you cover, sure as always read the PDS.

But since you have citibank i guess you really need to quiz them carfully.

Hmm interesting stuff - I will have award travel next year with mrssimongr and I havent bought travel insurance for ages (covered by company policy). I wonder if I go into the office in NY for a day during the trip whether my corporate policy might extend to me... the points used for the award were all earned on business travel....

Your company policy will probalby cover you but unless it states the words spouse or family members your misses will not.

Ok, i've found what i needed...


From the Citibank insurance PDS:

International Travel Insurance is a benefit available to Citibank
Gold​

​

cardholders who by use of the cardholder’s eligible
Gold credit card account purchased their overseas travel
tickets prior to leaving Australia.​

And previously, a definition:

“overseas travel ticket”​

means either
a one-way ticket from Australia; or
a return ticket, from and returning to Australia.

hullo folks

I have been reading posts and as I am flying out next week, am very interested in insurance and citibank policy in particular as I recently jumped at chance of free gold card - no fees forever + free insurance for overseas travel in first 6 months? Anyway have phoned citibank re this matter. Have been told unless ff points are earned on citibank card I will not be covered. Even tho I am using card to purchase tickets with said card for initial part of journey. I will not be covered at all with Zurich (insurers) on this trip.
