IT IS New Year's Eve partying on a scale that only the rich and famous can do.

A slew of celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx, flew into Sydney on Friday, reportedly as part of their plan to welcome in 2013 in Sydney before driving to Canberra airport to return to Las Vegas for a second tilt at New Year revelry.

My bolding of CBR. Interesting to see that they are leaving CBR on an international flight because of the SYD curfew.

Sounds like a wonderful way to spend the new year.

Just as long as they don't give us plebs any sermons about cutting down our greenhouse gas footprint and being more environmentally responsible blah, blah...

Despise cashed up hypocrites who like to tell people how to act and not walk the talk themselves....

But yes sounds like fun...

Well I did celebrate one of my daughter's second birthday twice once :)

Firstly in Melbourne and then in LA.

Though unfortunately it was via a Qantas 747 rather than a private one.

I'm still wondering how they can do it at all.

Let's say you see in the New Year in Sydney, and leave the party after an hour at 1pm. Given New Year's Eve road closures etc you're talking a minimum of 3 hours to get to Canberra. By the time you clear immigration and depart it is pretty much going to be 5am, but let's be even more generous and say they leave the party in Sydney at midnight and flight leaves at 4am. Flight to Canberra to Vegas is about 15 hours 44 minutes (travelmath.com). That flight will therefore arrive in Vegas at 7:44pm EST Aus time, which is 12:44am in Vegas. They've therefore missed their second New Year. Even with no delays to Canberra, no immigration delays, plus perfect winds, and everything running smoothly, they'd still be pushing just to land before midnight Vegas time, let alone make it to a party in Vegas to see in midnight!

I suspect a 747 with only around 25 passengers (guests + crew) would be able to move pretty fast. Especially if the pilots put their foot down! Can't see them leaving any later than 12:05am, and I'm sure there has already been plans made as to the logistics.

Surprised they aren't using helicopters. Are they controlled via noise curfew too?

But how are they leaving at 12:05am from Canberra if they are having a party and plan to see in the new year in Sydney? Even with helicopters it's at least an hour away. And they'd need several helicopters to take everyone, with it being unlikely that a venue could handle more than one or two helicopters at a time. And even then, AND if they can cut an hour off the flight to Vegas, it's still cutting it fine and banking on no delays. I'm still not totally convinced, unless they are not really going to be in Sydney for midnight.

Now it they were going to do the second new year in Hawaii, I'd believe that was possible.

I heard they are leaving SYD by aircraft (Kingair or similar turboprop, can fly in curfew period). 30 mins to Canberra, so land by 1am. Could be airborne from CBR by 1.30am.

Midnight LAS is 1900 AEDST, so if they leave SYD by 1 AM ( they are doing it by light aircraft), into Canberra by 0200, depart Canberra at 0230 with fifteen hours flying should have them arriving into LAS at 1730 AEDST.

I was meaning that they would leave Sydney straight after midnight. So basically be on the road by 12:05am for their trip to Canberra.

Agree. But worth a shot for them - they obviously think it's possible.

They aren't going by road, they are flying, on a noise compliant aircraft that can fly in the curfew period.

I read somewhere the plan was to use light aircraft/small private jet to depart SYD for CBR as these types of a/c are not subject to the curfew rules...?
So, chopper from venue to SYD at 00.30 ish, into CBR and depart on the 747 within 90 mins, 2am ish... might make it?

And as someone else said, a lightly loaded and thus lightly fuelled 747 may make some time up en route. However, I'm sure I remember JB747 saying in the Ask The Pilot thread that even a small increase in airspeed increases fuel consumption hugely....

Fact is though, the folks considering doing this are (I'd hazard) much wealthier than most of us, so they'll probably have had teams of people looking at the logistics...

Whatever you are doing guys and gals, HAPPY NEW YEAR and safe travels in 2013.

Cheers, D-H

You're so right.

Same as when you see U2 in concert & hear a few songs squeezed between sermons on poverty, 3rd World debt & how 1st World countries should allocate more taxes to foreign aid.

All delivered with a straight face as the band spends a fortune on tax advisers so they can avoid/minimise & shift their tax obligation away from Ireland & set up a cheaper structure in the Netherlands - Geldof does something similar.

No problem with people flying around the world for parties or the wealthy setting up legal tax avoidance schemes......just don't shove a different message down everyone else's throat.

My husbands birthday occurred on a flight where we lost a day. He now insists he is younger than me.

I agree about the carbon footprint thing too. Like the love feat that occurred in one of the hottest places on earth (UAE) and the aircond would have been full tilt. I wonder if Cate Blanchett was on that flight.

I wonder why Las Vegas? Probably the best place to get to in time.

Everyone is overlooking the obvious question. How many SC's and who are they going to credit them to? I mean, this is the ultimate SC run, right? That's what it's all about, right?

JB

I wonder if the 747 will be there in the morning. I'll have to keep my eye out.

This is all old.

I have done it a few times.

Bur not as glamorous.

Start at Tweed heads then walk to Coolangatta and do it all again.
