I wonder if the 747 will be there in the morning. I'll have to keep my eye out.

Sydney (YSSY / SYD – info)
Canberra Int'l (YSCB )
Scheduled: 08:00AM EST
Scheduled: 08:16AM EST

Does anyone know what customs arrangements are being made for this flight? Are they paying to set up a customs departure point at CBR or is the 747 tracking via another non-curfew airport with those facilities (which doesn't make sense as surely they'd just fly directly to that airport from Sydney)?

I'd be very interested to hear that it is now possible (with payment of some fee) to schedule a private international flight out of CBR - would open up some great possibilities like chartering a 737 full of rugby fans for direct flights to NZ Brumbies games (similar to those flights a previous chief minister organised about 10 years ago), or just an easier way to take my wife for our anniversary trips to the Bay of Islands.

Of course the way to obtain customs clearance out of CBR may well be A-List status not just money, in which case I definitely need not apply.

Canberra has been a designated customs staffed airport for a long time, no special arrangements needed, after all the PM leaves the country on a regular basis and overnight Canberra has the highest number of customs staff of any city on duty.

I have often thought about doing such a thing, Sydney NYE, and then Hawaii NYE.

Is it possible (commercial paying pax)?

If so, would anybody like to do it?

Not quite. All current scheduled flights (JQ/QF/HA) are overnight flights, departing between 1800 and 2130 to arrive between 0630 and 1000 the same day in HNL. So you'd have plenty of time to prepare for the HNL celebrations but you'd have left SYD well before the show started.

A theoretical daytime SYD-HNL flight (say, departing 0700 to arrive 1945 the previous day) would allow it.

Thank you for the reply. Does that include the whole East Coast of Oz (MEL, SYD, BNE & CNS) ?

If it were available, l would do it, and l think other people would too. How much would it cost to charter a plane to be able to do this, at a reasonable cost?

Good thought re CNS - United flies CNS-GUM a couple of nights a week, departing around 0130. You can then connect onto a morning flight to HNL and arrive in the late afternoon. So as long as New Years Eve is a Sunday or a Thursday, it could work. You'd need to be pretty quick to get from the fireworks to the airport in CNS though!

Out of BNE and MEL, however, I don't think it will work - the direct flights out of those ports are also night flights, and even the connecting flights that I can think of (NZ via AKL and FJ via NAN) don't work.

I assume this facility operates out of the RAAF side of the airport, not the commercial terminal? If anyone can make use of the customs facility to leave the country on a private flight I think I'll have to look into this further next time we want to fly to NZ.

There is no facility as such, it's done at the plane, a number of FBOs in Canberra can organise it.

Thanks for that - I didn't realise that the charter guys could organise it directly as part of their ground services. Until the article on these celebs I didn't think anyone outside government or military could use the 'international' part of the airport - very interested to have learned otherwise.

Spotted it upon landing in CBR just now. Could have gotten a close up if I was allowed to use my camera!

And I had an engine in the way on the dash I took out, so I couldn't get a better picture.

Looks like they have a fair bit of time up their sleeves:
