Re: Virgin to open exclusive lounge for high yield VIPs

Which comes from the term Chair Manager.

At risk of wading into an off topic controversy that's simply not true. i think the term "Chairman" sounds arhaic and particularly in the event that the role is held by a woman or a woman is contesting the role.. All organisations ive worked for simply use the term "Chair" as in "Chair of the board" and "The person who Chairs the meeting". Cant see the slightest problem with that at all. I don't have a problem with the use of the term Chairman where the Chair is, in fact, a man but when they aren't or when it is up for election and some of the candidates are not men it's pretty problematic.

A bit of background...

A chairman is the leader of a committee or parliamentary body. The origin is, as one might guess, a compound of the words chair + man. Thechair is a reference to a seat or position of authority and the man is, of course, a reference to the person who occupies it. The word dates to 1654 when it appears in John Trapp’s Commentary of the Book of Job:
I sate chief, and was Chair-man.
In more recent times the word has come under criticism for being sexist as not all such leaders are male. A backlash by those who want to preserve the old patterns of speech has resulted in some propagating a false etymology that states the -man is not a reference to a person at all and is, therefore, not sexist. This ill-informed view states that the -mancomes from the Latin manus, meaning hand, that the chairman is the hand of the one sitting in the chair guiding the meeting. This is complete bunk.(Source Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd Edition)

Re: Virgin to open exclusive lounge for high yield VIPs

If "Chair" is used though - should we call the lounge the "chair lounge" or the "chair club"?

That just seems weird....

IIRC, when Margaret Jackson was in the chair, she had no issue being referred to as Chairman.

That's the good thing about change. It happens over generations. I will continue to say chairman , I think chairperson sounds silly. Moreover I NEVER use or used the word In a sexist manner. So I don't feel I am being offensive.

However I appreciate that younger folk see things in a different light. And as such they will be the torch bearers of our language going forward

Agree with the debunking of the 'manus' myth, but have no problem with the term Chairman applying to both sexes (or any combination of the two ;)).

Margaret Jackson had no issues being 'Chairman' of Qantas - indeed she referred to herself as such in this little incident with security at LAX some years ago.

"And I said, 'I'm the chairman of an airline. I'm the chairman of Qantas'. And this black guy, who was, like, eight foot tall, said, 'But you're a woman'."

Re: Virgin to open exclusive lounge for high yield VIPs

I guess the Loungepersons Lounge will likely need an appropriate abbreviation on AFF too. Yes, there will be 'VIPs' in there I suppose, but surely all of them will have paid a full business (J) fare. Therefore, I respectfully suggest ...VAJ. Oprah would approve ;)

Rubbish!!

It's Chairman, Mr Chairman, Madam Chairman etc.

Simple.

If you don't like it - demote yourself to the call centre where you'll never have to encounter the term.

I don't really have a problem with calling it whatever you like but the "Chairman's club" as a nod to it's historical origins - in the same way we have "royal socieites" because of some weird enorsement Queen Victoria gave in 1870 but in practical terms the royals have nothing to do with it..

I'm not a fanatic or anything but the word literally means "the Man who is the Chair" and it's both inaccurate and redundant in this day and age because women now occupy these roles. So, "Chair", "Chairman" (if indeed the person is a man is ok) but it's probablematic when, calling for nominations for example or when there is a actually a woman. I[m fine with it as long as circumstances where they describe the reality of the situation or the opportunity (i.e. our orgaisation needs a chair/ a chairperson and they dont need to be a man).

It's basically just a dated piece of terminology from when the role was exclusively filled by men and just isn't accurate anymore.

NO, really it's a redundant term because it excuses something no longer true. Get with the 20th century and maybe even the 21st.
