I reckon QF could logically, from a business point of view, offer CL membership to selected moderators of AFF and FT :lol:

Lol. I actually agree in some ways. Moderators of various fora could potentially control what good and bad is said about Qantas, so Qantas could 'control' them via the gift inducement.

However, I believe the mods that I know/have met (which is all of them!), both here and in the Qantas forum at FT, are great people who wouldn't sell themselves out for such an inducement.

Actually, Chairmans Lounge is not technically part of the FF program. It is managed independently, similar to the separation between Qantas Club and Qantas frequent Flyer. A CL member is granted the benefits of Qantas Platinum Frequent Flyer as part of the membership, including OneWorld Emerald status. They are not issued a separate Platinum FF card. Their CL card is recognised by Qantas and partner airlines in its own right and includes an emerald OneWorld splodge.

So as far as the Qantas FF program is concerned, a CL member receives the same as a Platinum FF member. But the CL membership provides some benefits beyond those available to Platinum FF members, such as access to private lounges at some domestic airports, the highest level of priority for waitlisted upgrades, spouse/partner benefits and benefits associated with the secret handshake ;). But as far as the FF program is concerned, they have the equivalent of Platinum FF status (status bonus etc).

Secret handshake... kind of like the Freemasons?

I'm sure that they wouldn't sell themselves out either. I think that overall they might be a better "fit" as CL than some of the backbench pollies.

I have been CL for 9 years. There are very few benefits above Plat. apart from the "exclusive" domestic lounges, RARE preferential treatment from Qantas staff and that's about it....no glamor, no automatic upgrades. Feel free to bombard me with questions!

What about curbside assistance with the porter service when doing International flights? Being pre-checked in? Getting access to Spa treatments in the F Lounge the day before (ahead of Plats on the day) without necessarily having to travel in P Class? What about being able to call one number to have someone sort out lost baggage while your o/s? I would say that there are actually quite 'a few' benefits, wouldn't you?

I chatted to a CL on a flight tonight.. SYD-PER

I saw his BP and it said CL EMERALD

He mentioned that he doesn't fly a lot, he just "spends a packet of his companies' money on QF".

He also said he normally gets bumped to J but not on this flight as J was full. It worked out well for me as he and I had the only empty seat on the plane between us!

I think that mods have very little scope to control what is said about an airline. If they started selective deleting posts that are well within forum rules then the forum would quickly fall into decline.

... that why I steer clear of this web site:

Qantas Travel Insider

My perception is that it's not "Travel Insider", it's "Travel - what Qantas wants you to know" ...

And I have to ask, because this is kind of important to me in the lounges - what's the food like, say compared to the new Domestic Platinum lounges?

I believe the food is better- staff come out every 1/2 hour or so to replenish. Have not been in a domestic Qantas Club lounge for ~10 years.

PS to ALL: Please help- in any way you can- the Victorians and Queenslanders suffering right now- fire and flood. AWFUL.

I can answer (have relative who is CL)

Yes, upgrade automatically "subject to availability".
After 10 years of CL and >200,000 km per year on Qantas, I can only say "rubbish" to this claim....I have had 2 complimentary domestic upgrades in 10 years as CL.....as for international- forget about it!
Priority- yes. Freebies- no.

Again, not exactly my understanding.

You get specific seat choice (ie. 1A, 1F, 4A, 4C etc) rather than forward, aisle etc.

You dont get meal of choice unless there's extras loaded (but the crew will do it if available).

It's that "subject to availability" thing.

It's take a fair doing for a CL not to get a seat on the flight of their choice.

Apart from your final sentence- which is true- your other allegations are simply wrong. Are you a QANTAS employee? It is my perception that you are not a true (paying) frequent flyer.

This all relates to International, and yes, this is a very fair criticism of CL/CIP/VIP client treatment provided by QANTAS- but only for those who receive this status without any genuine personal contribution or loyalty to QANTAS.......automatic CL status for politicians offends me the most- I am disgusted every time I see a former "Champion of the Working Class" such as Simon Crean with his feet on the coffee table swigging champagne in a Chairman's/First Class lounge.
Also, for those of us who are truly Chairpersons and loyal QANTAS customers, we usually fly J domestic or F international on QANTAS anyway....and therefore CL offers little extra….the fancy lounges and spas etc. are lovely, but not a big deal for true global travellers……CX and SQ have had these services for J, F and Emerald or equivalent for more than 5 years.
