Change name or get new membership?

Afternoon,

My wife's velocity account is in her maiden name, which means she doesn't earn status credits or points (which pool to me) when she travels. Velocity can change her name but we need to send off the marriage certificate via email, and we all know what the velocity red email can be like.

Is there any down side that you can see to her signing up again, under her new name and then pooling to me? An upside I can see is new memberships get 500 bonus points, so that's something.

Your names do not need to be the same to use family pooling, you just have to have the same address. My partner pools to me and we are not married.

But she fly's under her new name as that is what her licence and passport say. so it wont let her use her velocity number cause the names don't match.

Just sign up a new velocity account, less room for error and can guarantee it will be the quickest way to get it done.
If she has no status or points, then there's nothing to be lost by letting the old account sit inactive.

I did this for both Velocity and QFF for my wife after we got married.

For everyone's information, I submitted a change of name certificate to VFF for their action. It was all sorted within 2 business days with a minimum of fuss, this was to the platinum email however so YMMV.

+1. I did exactly the same with Velocity for the same reasons. Not QFF though as I think she was able to change that by just phoning up.

Which is the wrong thing to do. Just change the name. Airlines know people get married. Email in a scan of the birth certificate, 1000s of people have done this already.

I even mistakenly enrolled one of my children with the wrong date of birth; birth certificate scan, 2 days = fixed.

Neither option is wrong. What advantage is there in sticking with the existing account if she has no points, SCs or status?

She can open a new account online instantly, with no need to scan or email the certificate and no need to wait for someone at VA to review it and action it. Why is that "the wrong thing to do?"

It's technically a violation of the Terms and Conditions.

You risk having one or both accounts suspended or cancelled (or even an account it pools to).

You are fraudulently receiving a benefit that you're not actually entitled to (if you get a new member bonus for someone who already has an account).

If you tried the legit method and it didn't work most people would probably accept that's a reasonable reason. Choosing not to try the legit method because you can't be bothered, assume it's not going to work, or want the 500 points undermines your argument a bit.

There's a 95% chance that none of this will blow up in your face but it could. It could theoretically happen just when you've got 200,000 Velocity points and you could forfeit them all.

I appreciate the opinions from everyone. Whether correct or not, the way I see it the person that held the account previously Miss X, no longer exists and is now Mrs Y. So as Mrs Y has never been a Velocity member before, she has chosen to get a new membership to go with her new name. Much the same as she has a new passport, new drivers licence and credit cards. As Miss X no longer exists, all the others were cancelled and reissued as Mrs Y.

I know the OP referred to the 500 point bonus, but as far as I can tell there is currently no bonus point offer for new members - I believe the offer expired on 30 June. So if the OP opens a new account now they won't get any new member bonus, and therefore they will not fraudulently be receiving any benefit as far as I can see. In any case, I don't think the odds of this scenario playing out are anything like 1 in 20, I'd actually say it's an extremely unlikely scenario (especially the bit about closure of the account receiving points via family pooling), but to be fair that's something we could only speculate on.

On a more general note, to pick up on OzEire's point, if your concern was about T&C violation, why not just say that in the first place? The OP is a relatively new member to this forum, who asked a pretty reasonable and straightforward question ("Is there any down side that you can see to her signing up again, under her new name and then pooling to me?"). Up until now, there were 5 separate replies advising the OP to make the name change, but not one even attempted to explain why there might be an issue with the other option.
