Change your Red-edeal QF fare class to a Flex class and then request refund?

I have a red edeal domestic ticket and my only cancellation option is a flight credit. Does anyone have any experience in simply changing the fare class to a Flex fare and paying the extra amount, then simply requesting a refund? (Noting a $99 fee is applicable). Has anyone done this?

I'd rather that than wait 2 hours on hold with QF to plead for a refund.

@JamesAu there are ways to turn a Red eDeal into a fundable fight but it will involve refunding to credits, making a new booking, cancelling for a credit, combining credits and then cancelling for a refund. At some stage a calling QF on at least one occasion will be inevitable and you have to throw more money at the Bank of QF. Depending on the value of your flight, your future flight plans and financial situation it may just be better to accept the credit and rebook for travel in the future.

Cancel your flight into a credit then use the credit to book a route that's unlikely to fly any time soon, eg. HKG, wait for it to get cancelled, then ask for a refund.

Wouldn't the QF-cancelled flight return the money to a flight credit? And Qantas entitled to leave it there?

No - it can go back to original form of payment. A flight credit is not really a credit with just a value, it's just a ticket that's sitting there open/unused. It's language that was invented during covid, but has actually existed since e-ticketing started.

Thanks. I assume Qantas Travel Pass (aka Qantas Pass) would be a different outcome because it would be a form of payment and hence why Qantas converted quite a bit of flight credits into Qantas Travel Pass.

Correct. Essentially by taking up the bonus offer and converting to a Travel Pass, you lock yourself out of a refund back to original form of payment.

My ticket was paid for partly with credit card and partly with a gift voucher (which I bought using the same credit card). When Qantas cancelled the flight they refused to refund the portion paid for with a gift voucher. They said they can only refund to the same method of payment. So they generated a new flight credit (with a brand new booking reference) and that's what they gave me.
