Changes Coming to BAEC?

I've just come across a thread on Flyertalk which is discussing possible changes coming soon to the BAEC frequent flyer program. GGL enhancements - FlyerTalk Forums

As with most changes to frequent flyer programs, I imagine there may be more negatives than positives for members, so now might be a good time to consider spending some of your spare avios.

Will be interesting to see how it pans out...

I have been following the thread on Flyertalk with some interest. I have always thought the GGL threshold too low when the benefits are considered. It is not a Mickey Mouse status like Platinum One, there are tangible benefits, not least the excellent GGL line and 3000 TP's seems a bit low to me. (Admittedly it is 5000 in the first year to qualify.)

I hope the Gold For Life requirement doesn't change but it was never my intent to pursue that. The BAEC is just a very good FF program for my travel needs, it allows me to fly a fair bit of F for the price of Y+. (Although obviously the F is not in the same bracket as EY, EK and SQ to name but three.)

To be fair don't think Platinum One was ever intended to be anything other than a way to enhance platinum...

i would be miffed if they changed the ggl re-qualification threshold.
but sounds like there is going to be a pretty huge shakeup of baec.
all speculation at this stage. got to see what they come up with and plan accordingly.

Bound to move to revenue based avios and status earning. The US3 have done so, Miles and More is as of Monday, Flying Blue is as of April. That leaves IAG as the hold out. The big players in the industry don’t like to be different from each other so BA can’t be too far behind.

the chatter is that things will be announced in April. Also there will likely be a "grace period" before these changes are effective.

The jury is out also as to whether it's just changes to GGL (and they may not even be that bad), to BAEC as a whole etc. Keeping in mind it was only a few years ago they made changes to the levels for qualification, albeit only the "Euro" status levels. In any case we shall see whether it's something to worry about or not.

The devil will be in the detail but it will be a matter of "just how bad will it get", rather than "will it get worse".

Hopefully the new revenue-based awards will only affect BA-operated flights and QF SYD-MEL etc. will remain as 4,500 Avios in Y and 9,000 Avios in J.

At the moment the BAEC is too good to be true for me. Negative change is inevitable, just as the decline of the QF mAsa was inevitable.

I’ll just make hay whilst the sun shines, and hope the program remains worthwhile. I’m less concerned about burn rates because I don’t use points very often

Well, I'm now BAEC Gold for 18 months, and the likelihood, depending on how "bad" the changes are, is that I won't bother attempting to renew Gold, based on revenue rather than tier points (too expensive).

I also wouldn't be surprised if Qantas decided to change their FF program from a points-based scheme to revenue-based. After all, everyone else seems to be doing it. When that happens, I guess I'll just choose the carrier and flights based on cost/convenience, as I did recently purchasing an Omanair business class ticket from Cairo to Melbourne.

Some might argue the move to reduce SC earn on OW partners flying routes that QF fly has already made the FF program revenue based.

The indications around these changes are largely pointing to redemptions (not earning) anyway, bringing in a sliding price scale ala what QF already has. The biggest risk for me is whether RFS will stay or not, I suspect they will but availability will magically start to become harder.
