From Tuesday 23rd May - Jetstar check in closing times will change:

Domestic check in closes 40 minutes prior to departure (10 minutes earlier)

International check in closes 60 minutes prior to departure (same for 787 but earlier for 320/321)

And both Domestic & international boarding gate closure to become 20min before flight (currently 15 min prior)

Which aside from SIN and (?? ADL maybe?) seems an irrelevant number as gates are open spaces where people mill about. How does a gate close?

What they really mean is they’re going to try and complete boarding and close the flight 20 mins before departure. 🤣😂💥🤪🤥. Sorry fell off my chair there. The flight actually closes when the ‘final call’ display becomes ‘closed’ and it’s always a random number somewhere in the vicinity of departure time. But I guess they can’t write that…

Lol - no.

Oldest trick in the book that JQ (and to be fair, QF) do all the time. Put Flight Closed on the display before they've even started boarding. Gets everyone to the gate ASAP.

So annoying to leave the lounge, see that on the display, run, only to find out they haven't even started boarding.

On a more serious note, I have seen doors closed ~ T-15 quite often on JQ - especially if it's the last flight of the shift for the crew, they're always in a rush to get going. It's either that or significantly delayed.

Boarding queues at MEL T4 already cross into each other as it is. Making people queue up even earlier will just lead to more overcrowding.

Unless they are also extending the turnaround times of aircraft, i cant see how they will close the boarding any earlier.

au contraire, it means when the flight is running early (it actually does happen a lot, especially on weekends and/or operating to smaller ports), they can leave early.

I used to fly JQ BNE-NTL often on a Sunday afternoon, and it was the last of four legs for the crew (NTL-BNE-TVL/PPP-BNE-NTL). Because it was the last leg the crew were keen to get home, they'd built a bit of time up in the NQ stop, and the last stop in BNE was 0:55, so we usually departed early.

Because as we know passengers arriving early to the gate will magically fix Boeing 787s with engine issues.

Airlines should get together to rollout contact less Checkin technology using common RFID tag with LED Display like is being rolled out with many airlines. Walk up, dump bag with tag. For international this would also speed things up when you still need a human in the loop.

Band-Aid solution to their terrible OTP.
Maybe, but if it assists then its not a big deal surely? We fly Jetstar a fair bit and accept that for the cheap fares the likelihood of lateness/cancellation is higher. So if this helps its not a great sacrifice. And lets face it QANTAS is not exactly covering itself with glory on its OTP lately!

Some of us fly JetStar with the aim of having them sponsor our vacation by booking a late night inbound flight with them (ideally last operating at the airport) and hoping they cancel it on us so we get a free hotel and meals out of the deal.
