internet addresses and businesses with these addresses will need to reregister for the .au address.

Will we need to reset all of our bookmarks after a certain time? Any date on when AFF will change?

There's no 'end' to these domain names, merely a tighter control over their use. You need to have an organisation or trademark of the same name.

It's just to weed out people jumping on to Australian domain names without a relevant commercial or organisational interest.

I think the issue is that someone else can knick the .au version of your domain name unless you grab it now. And pay more money. And so on. The .com.au will still work. It’s the first I’ve heard of it today so tried to register a couple of ours and of course they want info I just don’t know. Why the bureaucratic numpties in charge didn’t just ensure auto claiming rights for existing domains with no action required beggars belief.

.com.au domain names have always required additional verification such as Pty Ltd etc and not automatic so I see this as completely unnecessary.

The new .au (direct) domain is an additional domain and does not need any action to be taken by people with .com.au and .net.au etc domains, unless they also want to hold the .au (direct) domain with their existing domains. The rules have also changed as mentioned above so that there is a connection with Australia and with an existing business or trade mark.

I think even org.au and com.au are quite liberal. Merely having an ABN is enough for .com.au and I registered a .org.au for my kids preschool without needing any proof at all.

I don't see the benefit of the new .au domains, "com" has become entrenched into our society as the address for a website.

Absolutely! When I started out, it was ONLY Melbourne IT who could register the domains. A real bit of cronyism. I had a decent deal, but they tried to charge full price every renewal. One time, they refused to offer a deal. I was at the airport, and my email suddenly stopped, so I phoned. Of course, no notification was sent.

I paid, under protest, a ludicrous sum over $200 for registration and hosting iirc. I told them in no uncertain terms that I would be changing. I worked out how to change everything, and jumped ship. I was glad never to deal with those charlatans again.

On the plus side, I now know how to register and configure domains and hosting, but just before I retired!

You don't even need a relevant business name. I registered the name of my previous employer (they were US based) under .com.au and nobody batted an eyelid. The company did, because I kept nicking their customers, however. They registered their business as a trademark in Australia and slapped me with a legal threat (quite rightly too), so I gave it away.

So my current provider charges about $14/yr for .com.au domains and will charge $20/yr for .au domains, but is doing an auto-registration for $8.67/yr - I assume this is just the first year fee.

I don't really see any incentive for taking this up to be honest.
