So, are you sitting comfortably? Now we shall begin.

The partner and kids are in Canada. Flew there on Air Canada booked with my (okay, probably our) Velocity points.

She developed Covid-19 instantly she arrived, so has lost several days of the trip to being isolated and sick (even if she wasn't in isolation she wouldn't have been able to do much).

So we want to change the return flights. I check availability using Virgin's booking engine, which allows me to book three flights from Vancouver to Sydney on the preferred day or days, but obviously I don't proceed with the booking because I don't have enough points, I was just checking.

I phone Velocity to request the change. To be told there is no Reward seat availability on any of the 4 days (it's one flight a day) I ask about.

Checking the website again, only one of those days shows no availability. What is going on?

Plan A at this stage is to phone again later today, and hope to get a better operative. (This one started talking about Delta, but Delta are not involved.)

Plan B, which my partner is not keen on, is to cancel the return flights, wait for the points to re-credit, then re-book on the day she wants. The risk is obviously that they aren't really available, or won't be by then, and we'll have to buy tickets (probably on another airline - Air Canada are expensive).

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I'd agree with calling again
I wouldn't discount Delta. I understand DL award flights are still bookable via VA until June. The hassle of a connection would almost certainly outweigh the $ of a cash one-way fare

I would also check availability on the United website, which I've found pretty reliable in predicting if there's availability with VA. If you're seeing the award seats on both UA and VA, I'd have confidence that they really are available.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

But this is Air Canada availability, really.

I assume what is being referred to is genuine (not phantom) availability on AC for their partners. AC availability on own website may be wider than for partners

Is going through USA, considering any visa/passports issues, with DL or UA, OK?
Air Canada to BNE? At least that gets them to AU.

AC award availability is done by point of commencement. For example if your booking was SYD-YVR-SYD, then YVR-SYD availability if you want to change, is based on a SYD point of commencement.

What you are seeing is probably YVR-SYD availability based on YVR point of commencement. If you want to confirm whether this is the case, try and book a SYD-YVR-SYD as a new award and see what the availability is like for YVR-SYD.

If you see no availability when looking as a return, then you'll need to cancel and book a new one way award.

I'm not sure what you mean. When I use the Virgin website to try to book flights with points on those dates, it tells me there is availability, right up to the point that it tells me I don't have enough points to proceed with the booking.

I am now on the phone to Virgin and they agree that the public view and the view from their system is different, and are trying to work out how to go forward..

Okay, thanks.
She's nervous about cancelling, for obvious reasons I suppose. And any thoughts on how long it will take for the points to credit, allowing me to re-book?

Availability is fine for Sydney to Vancouver on 22 April (just a random date) and returning 29 April (which is the date we want to change the return leg to).

United shows availability for the three seats I want...

No idea honestly without being able to look at the PNR. A question best asked to the phone operator. It can be refunded on the spot under the right conditions.

This is kind of unfolding live.

The agent is trying to book me the flights through their public website, by giving me the necessary points and taking my credit cards details for the charges, and if it works she will then cancel the existing booking.

And that worked.

Thanks everyone for your advice. There does seem to be a glitch in Virgin's ability to see availability on Air Canada flights,

And that worked.
Hooray!
