Charged $$ to change a classic reward ticket

Yes, red e deal was used he just came home a week early so I was changing CR leg
So as there wouldn’t be any fares available for the red e-deal if the date had passed it sounds like the sector was repriced into a flexible booking class (M?).

TBH would have been probably cheaper to forgo the points and book a business class fare on Rex 🤣 (depending on timing). Or just make a new booking using points.

Certainly paying $360 to save 16000 pts doesn’t sound like a great deal.

Did he earn points and status credits for both flights?
Are you suggesting the return may not have been a CR, but a ASA (ie points for revenue fare) booking which would take on the fare conditions of that fare type?

Or make a new booking using points and then wait for Red e-deal to be used up and then cancel the one-way reward which should be refunded less 6000 points cancellation?

No a bad decision in a stressful moment. I’ve learned heaps from all of you. I now understand it much better. He just needed to get home quickly and the early flights were $1100 to purchase if we cancelled or via Melbourne as a CR so we just paid up.

We did ask about that route but he said it’d go into a credit on my account and have to be applied to a similiar fare class within 12 months. Was all too hard by then. To be honest that’s what I called up thinking would happen just write off 6000 job done.

If your son flew the first leg and only return leg Classic reward remained on booking then you should have been able to cancel the classic reward as per normal.

Anyway these are all good lessons for all of us.

I booked SYD-BKK Christmas Day one-way using QFF points for 52,500 points + $450 in economy for wife, daughter and myself. I thought that was a great deal.

But then trying to come home end of next week was painful. No award flights on any route, on any airline. $4000+ for 3 of us one way. Finally settled on CNX-SIN-DPS-ADL-BNE with Scoot/SQ/VA for just on $2500 for 3 of us but I think that will be tiring.

Next Christmas need to book paid return airfare to avoid same issues.
