Chasing Status: What's your motivation?

She was wrong
I've always been able to select status seats (as both Platinum and Gold) for other members of my group (at booking if on same PNR or via call centre if not)
Priority check-in and boarding is always together.
Lounge access subject to guesting rules (but often generous with extra children)

She doesn't know what she is talking about. I've had no problem with family getting good seats and using priority when travelling with me on the same booking. The big proviso is that they must be on the same booking. Perhaps you need to clarify whether you're talking about the same booking or separate bookings.
Same booking.

She kept rabbiting on about any privileges being for the card holder only, and to refer to the website for the benefits-at-a-glance page, which I am familiar with but doesn't answer my question.

Medhead can you confirm that you select your seats at the time of booking?

Call back and try again. It sounds like you got a dud. Even when not on same PNR, I've been able to have their seat selected next to me in row 3 (via the GCC) and a month ago, I even got them into row 3 OOL-MEL based on the info that I was to meet them in MEL for us to join up for a MEL-LST leg. I did the MEL-LST leg first and then sweetly requested the OOL-MEL leg for them solo and it worked (I was flying CNS-MEL on QF)!

I just made a phone call to Velocity … Unless the chick on the other end of the phone didn't know what she was talking about?

See? You've just experienced yet another Velocity status benefit that's available equally to you as a Gold, as well as your travelling companions — the inability for VA to consistently give any information reliably!

In all seriousness, you can even try a dummy booking on the website and check that you can select seats together for you and companions at the same time, prior to payment.

I can't 100% confirm. But we've always sat together, near the front, when travelling together. I normally select seats when booking. Occasionally change them via Manage My Booking. I've never selected seats on VA over the phone.

As per Cryptarcadian just do a booking on the website and see what seats you can select.

Thanks for the replies everyone, and apologies for hijacking the thread. I will atone; keep reading!

I have just gone ahead and entered into a family pooling arrangement. The status credits and points will be directed my way instead of to the missus who normally handles the bookings, simply because I am now periodically allowed to take advantage of a 10% corporate discount for VA flights as long as I use my work email address.

As previously mentioned I have a bit of a hang-up for seat allocation at time of booking and see a higher status level as a guarantee of greater satisfaction in this regard. We are both on just 30 points with VA which will expire in September, but in July we are flying to Fiji and back direct from Melbourne (business class if you don't mind; special treat, but booked too early to take advantage of the discount) which will now deliver 320 points to me. We considered an indirect flight to gain more status but it simply didn't work for us. In January we intend travelling to NZ for a tour in/out of Christchurch; a flexi fare will almost get me to Gold status but not quite, so a short fling somewhere between now and then will get me over the line. Maybe Hobart on Cup weekend.

The upshot is, I will go from virtual zero to gold status hero in 9 months, thanks to VA family pooling, nuthin' but leisure flights, and hopefully my fears about not being allowed to include the missus with my privileged seat allocation will be allayed.

I will keep you posted! :)

Re: Best QF Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

It was like the Sea of Galilee opening up and then closing behind us.
I should clarify that it was the Red Sea that opened up, not the Sea of Galilee (assuming you're talking about the biblical story). :)

Priority security/check-in is a huge bonus IMO. I flew out of OOL a few weeks ago on a Saturday morning and I'm sure I was able to save over 60 minutes from a massive queue that must have been a few hundred meters. I was able to skip the entire queue and took less than a minute to get through security.

Lounge access makes delays a lot less disappointing too. :)

A 950 km (475 km each way) status run is extreme? Amateur effort at best. Still it shows that people at all levels of society value their earned status.
NZ is pretty small.

You don't know Airpoints very well, it is likely she scored more SP for the intra NZ run than she would have, say, trans Tasman.

These days, you can not be really certain of any specific SP earn for a segment until actually booking. It's not surprising they came up a little short and had to do a SP run.

FWIW, the upgrade bennies of *E are pretty good, but it is expensive to attain and also difficult if not an NZ resident.

There IS no business class in intra NZ flights - the best one can hope for is a forward seat or one with extra legroom (generally at $$).

Pretty much all short hops so no wonder, I guess. Selfishly and somewhat of a surprise to me, I have actually grown quite fond of J Dom!

My motivation for chasing status:
A few years ago a work trip introduced me to business class and at that moment I realised that flying could be a pleasure for its own sake, not just as a necessary part of getting somewhere else. Until then "elite frequent flyers" and nice seats were completely foreign to me, they were part of some world I vaguely knew about but had nothing to do with me or my life. And lounges too! My god - airports could be pleasant and productive places to spend time too. And I found that flying business there was no massive line to check in and again for security and again for boarding. And no humiliating re-packing bags at check in, just add another bag.

Then I found that frequent flyers with status got most of that without having to pay for business class, but it was easier to get good seats and better flights with status and everything helps everything else. Oh, and airline staff, except in Paris, are just about all really polite and pleasant. It got better and better. So flying became a hobby for its own sake and FF status makes that even more pleasant, and the more flying the more status. Even work trips can be a pleasure. And you can work on the plane, or sleep!

I fully realise that it is irrational and just pays lots of money to the airlines. I could fly business class more cheaply on best-fare-of-the-day, though not domestically in Oz. It means nothing in the end, but is part of a fun game that I'm privileged enough by virtue of years of hard work to be able to afford. My flying is a mix of for-work and for-pleasure, but all self-funded. Both combined along with creative or absurd indirect routings bring the status, which in turn keeps flying a pleasure.

I never dreamed it could ever be me in the fancy seats up the front, but now it is and I like it.
