Note I used the term "pocketed by the Airport/DutyFree store".Being an airport concessionaire, their overheads may be far greater than retailers elsewhere, hence their higher markups. A case of passing costs from airport owners to consumers.
There is no doubt the airport owners are aware of the margins available.
However, when KRudd increased the Tobacco excise about two years ago, within a few days 250's Winfield went from $49.95 to $57.95 a carton at Mebourne F1rst - I'm sure the rent/concession cost is not directly indexed to tobacco excise.
