Just putting this out there for anyone who's interested. Not much publicity for this, given the attention on the MH370 situation.
Booking period ends April 7 for travel up to November 30. Return flights to London are around $5900. I think it's less for other European destinations. I only happened to stumble on this yesterday when I was looking around for flights.

That's not far of the AY fares, which I would have a preference for.

Are AY fares always around that price? I was considering using them next year.

Not always, obviously there is peak periods where they are made to be cheap, but availability is usually pretty good.

Thanks! I'll have a good look at the J product. :)

Preference because of hard/soft product? Miserable earning rates on QF? I can't imagine you being part of the 'I'm never flying MH' club.. :p

The new J product on AY looks good and the chances of getting one of the non-refurbished birds next year is pretty low. Earning rates on QFF should be reasonable. Nothing could be worse than the earning rates on QFF when flying MH!

The extra SCs help, you transit HKG or SIN which leave KUL for dead re lounges and general facilities, and you can get the QFA380.

And don't forget sometimes AY offers a return flight within Europe "at no additional cost" to their J fare (ie you can stop in Helsinki, or fly onto London etc for the same price). I have only accessed these via a TA - not sure how, if at all, they would appear on the website.

LH sometimes does the same.

Thanks for the tips! It's still way too early as this is for March 2015. I'll seriously start looking into it in the second half of the year.

Sorry, don't understand OTA

Believe it or not, both times I was made aware of the free AY Europe flights, I asked the TA for various Oz- Europe options, as I usually do, and it happened to be available! First time I cancelled so didn't use.

No worries at all; I was being lazy and used initials OTA to mean Online Travel Agency. Am guessing from your reply that you visited a TA in person? Was this a Flight Centre type or similar?

Its a well established and credentialed TA firm in Melbourne, who mainly has corporate clients, but happily deals with individuals and walk-off-the-streets. Have used them for about 5 years - so we know each other well :) Not Flight Centre type ...

Great information thanks. I will look into this as am in the process of researching a trip to UK and trying to avoid excessive APD.

Don't forget if points and status credits are not an issue, you can fly on MH to Europe return in J for less than $4k with 1,000 points plus pay!

If you don't mind a bit of a milk run (and stop overs in Bali), Garuda from BNE to AMS (or LGW from 07SEP) in business (D class) is quite cheap... $4210 to AMS all year. Believe lastminute.com will throw in 2 nights in Bali as well for May/early June departures.
