I note they say only 4 minutes difference?

So which is cheaper: Jamica or Howard beach?

Both Airtrain and subway run 24 hours, 7 days. There can be changes due to trackwork on weekends.

Prices are the same - $5 for Airtrain to Howard Beach or Jamaica (Sutphin Blvd), then $2.50 flat fare for any trip on the subway, including change of trains.

From your description it looks like the nearest subway station is 103rd St on the 1 Train, at 103rd and Broadway. Take Airtrain to either station. From Jamaica (Sutphin Blvd) take the E train, from Howard Beach take the A train. Change at 42nd Street to a northbound (uptown) 1 train to 103rd Street. This will require a walk of a couple of hundred metres through a subway from 8th to 7th Avenues (all inside the fare gates). Note that this is the largest, busiest and possibly most complex station in the subway.

An alternative would be to take Airtrain to Howard Beach, then the A train direct to 103rd Street (at Central Park West), only a short walk to Broadway. This is probably easier as it avoids 42nd Street station. For maps see http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/subwaymap.pdf

Unlike many other cities, NY subway lines are almost never referred to by their colour on the map, only by the route number or letter (both are used for different services), or sometimes by the street under which they run. In Manhattan direction is given as uptown (northbound) or downtown (southbound).

Subway is as cheap as it gets and what is more New York than catching the subway.

Don't be worried about your luggage taking up room, as long as it's next to you, no one will mind.

It's a daunting experience for a first timer but after your first ride, it will set you up to use it for the rest of the stay.

I did it on my last visit. Picked it perfectly, came out of the subway and there was the Intercon!!!

I would go for the subway as well. The first time I went to the US, I had no issue finding my way from JFK to downtown Manhattan so it shouldn't be too hard.

Although might have to watch out for the carriage(s) where the homeless hangout (subways are a warm place to be on a cold winters night). We've stumbled into such carriages a couple of times, and whilst it in no way felt any threat to our security, there were certainly some very different smells to challenge that particular sense.
