Hi All.

Father in law booked a flight to South America flying the first leg with LAN Chile from Sydeny to Santiago. He then on a seperate booking with Pluna booked from Santiago to Montevideo as it was a lot cheaper this way. The stopover in the airport is only 3 hours so he obviously doesn't want to go through customs (visa cost of $60) to collect his bags.

Is it possible for the check in agents at Sydney to get his bags checked all the way through to Montevideo even though they are on two different tickets? Also, can he get his seat ticket at Sydney or will he need to do that at the airport in Santiago?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I haven't heard of Pluna but I would say it's unlikely. The best thing to do would be to call LAN and ask but because they are two separate carriers on two separate PNRs and unlikely to have an interline agreement, I'd say he might be out of luck.
