I’m after people’s advice and experience about checked luggage for an upcoming international flight.
We are flying from MEL-DXB on QF/EK codeshare that departs at 0630. We live in Canberra and the only way to make the 0630 flight is to go down the day before. We are happy with this - a little side trip to MEL arriving about 1330 the day before the international leg and then an overnight in the airport hotel is good way to start a trip and minimise schedule/delay stress. The CBR-MEL flight is on the same ticket as the MEL-DXB flight. So it’s definitely a connecting flight.
Now I’m thinking about luggage because we will have a LOT of luggage for this trip - we are allowed 116kg between us and we are taking over a lot of housewares, wines and Aussie foodstuffs for Seat Son, plus his ski boots etc etc.
Given the length of time between arriving in MEL the day before the international leg, when I board in CBR, is it possible (optional at my discretion) to check luggage right through to final destination of DXB or do I have to retrieve it in MEL, lug it to the hotel, re-lug it back the next morning at o’dark o’clock and re-check it in?
Or is it compulsory to check it in in CBR for CBR-MEL-DXB even though there is quite a long gap ( about 17 hrs) between arriving in MEL and departing from MEL to DXB And so I won’t have the option in case I want to add something to checked luggage at that point. I’ve only ever gone CBR-SYD-DXB before (all flights on same day) and of course you just wave the bag goodbye in CBR and it (usually) turns up in DXB.
Glad to hear if anyone has done this, has definitive info (saves me calling and trying to get an answer) or even an opinion about the risk of leaving luggage in MEL for 17 hours and it gets forgotten and isn’t loaded for DXB.
thanks all.
