Checking baggage through from Velocity redemption with QR onto domestic QF?

Hi team, might be asking a bit much of airlines and airport staff, but worth asking you all.

Snagged a Velocity reward seat on QR in J from Europe to ADL next year. Issue is, I live in MEL (there were no awards available the day I wanted).

So, I’ll need to tack on a domestic flight home. I figure given QR and QF are Oneworld partners, I might be able to ask the check-in agents to check the baggage through to MEL if I present the second ticket’s PNR/Booking.

Would this be likely to work? I’ve had luck checking through baggage on separate tickets on the same airline (CI - on a QF redemption) but might be pushing my luck here.

Would I have better chance linking to VA domestic given the QR redemption was through Velocity?

Thanks for any advice!

Oneworld has a policy that they do not connect bags between separate bookings (PNRs), even on the same carrier. However individual airlines can choose to do this. Most of them do same carrier connections (inc QF). AA does not.

QF won't check bags between separate bookings unless one is revenue and the other is award (but I'm not sure that extends to VA awards), however this is not relevant to your question as you are going the other way.

QR used to do it, but the part on their website that said they did it has been removed. FlyerTalk has many reports of people getting refused.

Given you have to recheck your bag anyway after clearing customs, and through check isn't going to protect your connection, are you really gaining much? I've never connected I-D in ADL but I would assume it's a simple process.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Unfortunately given that you need to clear customs at port of entry, afaik you can't through check any bags going from any I - D connection (even Qantas to Qantas). The only way it works is if the Domestic leg is actually an "International" departing from Int'l terminal.

For reference if it was the other way around. (MEL > ADL > DOH) with a QF > QR connection, it is possible as you have an awards QR booking (even though its via VA) and a revenue and awards can be through checked.

Possibly the easiest I-D airport in Australia.
ADL has “Smart Gates”.
Collect baggage clear customs and exit.
Take escalator to first floor, bag drop at QF.
Online check in 24 hours prior to the QF departure.

Technically the bags can through checked, but you still have to move the bags through customs yourself.

The end result isn't a huge difference, it's just whether the bags need to be retagged or not.

Yeah, as the others said.. there's little difference here to if you could get the bag checked through (unlikely) as ADL is easy arrive, grab your bag and just take it over to QF and Alan's your Uncle.. I mean Vanessa's your Aunt.

Not what you're asking about, but you should check for availability in J on QR988 from DOH to MEL the day after your Europe to DOH flight.

The Virgin booking engine's kinda cough in this regard and might not show the Europe-DOH-MEL flight but you can call up and book it for 139K points plus (exxy) carrier charges provided the layover in DOH is less than 24 hours.

The real question that should be considered IMHO is how much connection time you built into these separately booked tickets? From what I’ve so far the connection process is very simple compared to say that of SYD. I suppose if QR gets into Adelaide more than 4 hours later you can claim EU261 (600 Euros = $1000 AUD) in compensation which I suspect would be more than enough to cover a walk up cash fare to MEL.
