We will be flying oversreas with our 2.5 year old for the first time (Sydney to Queenstown NZ, via Jetstar). Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere - are we allowed to take a small stroller and child backpack carrier on-board, as part of our carry-on luggage?

Stroller: 87 x 42 x 98, 4.5kg
Backpack: 41 x 32 x 73cm, 1.9kg

If they are allowed, where can we store them exactly? They would be too long to store in the overhead compartments. Would the weights contribute to the 7Kg carry-on luggage allowance?

If they aren't allowed, any recommendations on how to safely put them into check-in luggage without risking damage? Maybe cling wrap to hold things in tact?

Also, are small amounts of play-doh (kids plasticine) allowed on-board? Our little one really enjoys playing with this and would help keep her distracted and mischief free on the flight.

If the stroller is a standard one rather than one designed to collapse down to cabin baggage size, then it will need to be checked in, most likely at the gate.

So does that mean the stroller can be taken past the check-in counter, all the way up to the gates, then we get staff at the gate to take it into the flight while we board?

Would that also mean staff will bring the stroller back to us at our destination when we exit the gate, or would it just end up on the luggage belt?

Usually you can check it at the gate at boarding time. But will have to collect with other baggage at the other end.

And re the play doh, it’s likely to be classed as a gel. So you will need to have very small tubs (less than 100ml/100g) and in the clear plastic bag with other gels and liquids. You can’t take a big tub half filled either. So look for those little sample sized pots that you can find from time to time or buy some travel cosmetic containers of suitable size and put it in that. Good luck!

Usually you collect at the luggage belt (or oversize luggage area if applicable). Good news is that Queenstown is a very small airport so you won't have very far to walk without the pram.

Thanks all for the responses! Just an FYI, we flew from Sydney a few days ago. Jetstar staff at check-in counter told us to check-in our stroller and baby carrier, then hand them over to the oversize luggage area (one on either end of Sydney International airport). This meant we couldn't use the stroller afterwards, however the staff said there would be similar strollers scattered throughout the airport once we got past the security check area. These are free for our use, but only issue was availability and where to find one. Thankfully we found one right after the security check area. We then left these at the boarding gate area just prior to boarding our flight.

As for the Queenstown end, we didn't find anything similar but as @jpp42 mentioned it's a small airport so it wasn't an issue for us. We collected our stroller and baby carrier at the oversize luggage area.

@blackcat20 those small playdoh tubs are what we took, however we didn't want to risk it so put into check-in luggage. We may try bring them on carry-on for our return trip.

Late to the party but from memory with JQ and QF had to check-in stroller. Qantas does have loan strollers you can take through security and to the gate.

With VA, SQ, EK could take stroller through security and check it in at the gate and it comes out in oversize.
