I flew with China Southern several times in Nov/Dec 2009. Sydney - Guangzhou - Dalian - Shanghai - Beijing - Guangzhou - Sydney. Wasnt my choice (I was travelling as part of a group), but service was efficient and flights were on time. Most of the people on the flight were Chinese, so the FA's were very attentive to us. Instead of giving us a glass of water, they gave us the 1.5L bottle! No inseat entertainment at that time, but it was 2 yrs ago. I'd fly with them again. The only other thing I noticed was that noone paid too much attention to the seats they were allocated. I was last onboard from Beijing/Guangzhou, and there was no space available for my bag, so they just put in on a chair. I asked them to strap it in, as I knew I'd gone close to my weight limit, and that thing would have hurt should we hit turbulance!

Personally, I wouldn't. I am making a complaint to the Tax department, as I can't even get a copy of a Tax receipt from them as they ignore everything, which also means I can't make any travel insurance claims. Surely there are minimum requirements for them to operate here. Will submit complaint to Fair Trading too.

I've got a few Y+ flights booked with them SYD-CAN-URC-ASB and FRU-URC-PEK-CAN-SYD, with a stopover in CAN on the way over and PEK on the way back for $2000.
Given the lack of choices to fly to Central Asia, they are by far the best carrier into the region. Other good option was Turkish air, but figured the extra cost and the fact they were probably of a similar standard to china southern made it easy to decide.

i'll do a report in August when i'm back :-)

Flew them last year, was a paid work trip in Business, never again.
Ignored requests, had no idea what i was talking about when i asked for chop sticks, blanket given to me not wrapped in plastic, virgin domestic entertainment system, terrible food (unusual for Asian airline), don't even get me started on the check in. I flew China Air the same year and was a polar opposite, and even scored an upgrade to F whilst boarding.
