We have a Visa for China. On the application we gave our hotel details but are now thinking about changing hotels in Shanghai. How strict are Chinese immigration on this and is there anything we need to do to do this?

If you have a standard tourist or business visa, for all I know they don't care even if you sleep on the street.

You can knock yourself out with changes The information on the visa application is only indicative. You'll be asked to provide your accommodation details on the arrival form, and even then, if you change it doesn't really matter, your hotel automatically registers you with the police... so they know where you are

You don't need to do anything or notify anyone. You can even change your flights into and out of China... change the airline, date or time of travel, or all three. No need to notify in any of those circumstances (provided you stay within the visa validity).

I know, (the sleeping in the street part was a joke) the hotel takes scan of the visa and passport when checking in, but the immigration officer doesn't care if the hotel mentioned in a visa application is the actual hotel where you are staying, at least that's my experience. Last time in Beijing I didn't stay at the hotel mentioned in my application.

Brickmark, agree with the comments so far, arrive with confidence in China you will not have any issues. Recently travelled to Shanghai, Beiijng, Xian without any questions or concern. Felt safe, wonderful culture, try the terrific street food stalls. Enjoy your trip.

They need to know the hotel so they can install the surveillance gear
