In other words, anyone who thinks their PIN is secure and only known by them is sadly mistaken...i just received a letter from AMEX with a "scratch" to reveal your pin...................guess what?
it's the same PIN as my Westpac Altitude Black MC/Amex..........spooky!
We could not process your request as only Chip Cards are eligible for PIN services. Magnetic stripe Cards will NOT be impacted by the 1 August change, and you can continue to sign for your in-store purchases. You will receive a chip enabled Card by March 2015 and will be required to select a PIN during activation. Please call the Customer Service number on the back of your card or refer to FAQs for further assistance.

Maybe the Westpac email assumes that all cards will have chips by Aug 1st. I have had discussion as late as last night at Blue train in Melbourne when i was told I would need a Pin from Aug 1st. She was not going to be convinced that a card without a chip would be OK.So here are two excerpts from emails I received in the last couple of days:
(From American Express) Important Notice: If you do not have a chip enabled card, you will not be impacted by the 1 August change, and can continue to use your Card as normal
(From Westpac) All credit and debit cards issued in Australia will require you to use a PIN to complete your transaction from August 1 2014 at the checkout/point of sale.
So, anyone know which statement is actually correct? They can't both be right. For non-chip enabled cards that is...
Maybe the amex was referring to a charge card?...

note that all Australian cards, even ones that work with PINs in Australia and that have chips, appear to be signature-only in the UK.

Just bumping this now that the requirement for a PIN has supposedly begun. Our Westpac terminals are still allowing signatures and Westpac has advised that they won't even begin updating terminals until September. So it seems as though the widely publicised 1 August deadline may have just been part of a push to get consumers to add a PIN and not really a "hard date" as had been mooted around the traps. Meanwhile merchants that have invested in new, mobile terminals and staff training are left to do it all again in coming weeks and months when the real switch actually begins.
