Hi there,

I need to cancel a classic flight reward that departs within the next 24h. My understanding until now was that these fares could be cancelled / changed until the departure time, with a penalty of 6k/5k points.

Reading the below, has this actually been moved to 24h prior to departure? I find the following passages a bit confusing:

Classic Flight Rewards

Changes
  • Within 24 hours of your Classic Flight Reward booking departing, you can change date and time, or cancel your booking, by calling your local Qantas office. Exception: If the change is requested for an airline that requires ticket reissue for changes to flight number or date of travel, changes are only permitted up to 24 hours before departure of the first flight in your booking. For further information call your local Qantas
and then in regards to Cancellations:
Cancellations

You can cancel your Classic Flight Reward bookings up to 24 hours before departure of the first flight on your ticket at Manage booking.

Any insights on the cancellation deadline? And regardless of that, am I right in thinking if you can't cancel within 24h of departure you can change to a later date and then subsequently cancel?

Thanks!

Legal precedent is the most favourable term to the consumer supersedes any other term.

So the following is what you need to consider:

Within 24 hours of your Classic Flight Reward booking departing, you can change date and time, or cancel your booking, by calling your local Qantas office
In any case, those terms do not conflict - the latter indicates such cancellation can be done online up to 24 hours before via "Manage Booking".

Note that I have in the past cancelled award bookings on the day of travel using "Manage Booking".

If I'm reading correctly, you can cancel up until departure, but if within 24h it needs to be done by calling, and not online ("Manage booking"), so the two terms above aren't conflicting.
Agreed. I imagine it will have something to do with the transfer to airport control, and the online MMB not interfacing to that system.
