I am travelling to South Africa next year with my wife and would like to use up some of our FF points to book return business fares from Melbourne. As I see it there are two choices with Qantas FF. Classic points required are 384K plus $1500 taxes or cheapest ASA points appear to be about 530K. ie 150K points extra versus $1500. Any suggestions on which is better value ? A lot of the classic reward flights charge J but you fly PE. Any suggestions on finding the dates for the cheapest ASA flights or just trawl through until you get lucky.

David which ports and proposed travel dates?

Generally if classic awards are available, any seat awards at the cheap rates can be as well (unless you are seeing additional allocation for Status'ed members).

With the JASA, have you used the slider to see what the $$$ component is when the slider hits the minimum points

Presumably the routing is MEL-SYD-JNB vv? For that on a JASA all in Business you would each earn a minimum of 23000 QFF points and 400 SC's. (A WP 36.7K)

mel - jnb in June - August. Choices appear to be mel -syd - jnb all with QF or mel - per - jnb with QF domestic and South African per - jnb. Probably prefer MEL - SYD - JNB all with QF.
Many thanks for your input.

I prefer JASA, BUT, Mrs GPH looks a lot further out and seeks out specials,
Her most recent success was an FASA special, for not a great deal moe than standard JASA!
It helps to be able to be flexible with dates , which in our situation we can be.
